Job Description


Licensed Nuclear Facilities includes the Fuels and Materials Cells (FMC) and the Universal Cells (UC). The Fuels and Material Cells Facility (FMC) is used primarily for the detailed examination of irradiated materials. Under the direction of the Facility Supervisor, Fuels & Materials Cells Hot Cell Technicians are trained and to acquire the knowledge of operating procedures and processes, and to operate the specialized equipment necessary for Post Irradiation Examination (PIE) and Metallographic examination of materials. He/she will also assist in the general operations of the facility as required to maintain the Facility Authorization of this Class I Nuclear Facility.

DUTIES
Functions and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Using master-slave manipulators, operate in-cell equipment including hand tools, power tools, measurement devices and process equipment.
  • Perform radioactive material flask handling and transfer operations and perform routine maintenance on on-site transfer flasks.
  • Perform all operations of Hot Cells within the limits imposed by the Facility Authorization, and as defined in other operations documentation.
  • Assist in providing technical support for maintenance of all hot cell systems.
  • To be responsible for the safe, proper and efficient operation of all in-cell and out-of-cell PIE equipment.
  • To be familiar with the appropriate methods and precautions required for the handling of radioactive materials.
  • To carry out or assist in the design, construction, repair, testing, evaluation and operational development of specialized PIE equipment.
  • To be cross-trained in several processes competently.
  • To prepare records, procedures, memoranda and reports through the use of Personal Computers.
  • To perform other related duties appropriate to the assigned level.
  • Carrying out other operational duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a diploma from a recognized institute of advanced technology with a specialization in metallography, materials sciences, material testing, engineering, or related discipline.
  • Or Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and normally has more than 3 years pertinent experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of pertinent technological experience is considered an asset.
  • Experience sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing and etching metal specimens.
  • Experience utilizing optical microscopes.
  • General knowledge of metallurgy, materials degradation phenomena, and failure analysis.
  • General knowledge of zirconium alloys would be beneficial.
  • Experience performing hands-on work that requires a high level of manual dexterity and depth perception, such as working with master-slave manipulators or remote controlled equipment is considered an asset.
  • Must pass a manipulator test.
  • Must be mechanically inclined and experienced working with hand tools, power tools, measurement devices and process equipment.
  • Skill in operating pumps, valves, fans, compressors, hoists, lift trucks, overhead cranes (up to 30-ton capacity), rig slings and lifting tackle is considered an asset.
  • Experience using image analysis software and knowledge in the use of computers to produce facility logs, reports, inventory records, commissioning procedures, operating procedures and maintenance procedures.
Abilities and Skills
  • Must be mechanically inclined and be comfortable in performing hands on work.
  • Must demonstrate excellent manual dexterity.
  • Must have broad training or educational qualifications specific to the job duties; be willing to obtain or attend further job related training and accreditation.
  • Ability to perform under stress when confronted with emergency, unusual or hazardous conditions.
  • Must possess good judgment and communication skills [oral and written].
  • Demonstrate ability to work as an effective team member, and to respond to challenging schedule demands.
  • Must possess a high sense of individual responsibility.
  • Direct experience in a nuclear environment would be an asset.
  • Must be able to wear a respirator and other forms of protective equipment and clothing for unspecified periods of time.
  • Knowledge acquired through formal training or on job experience in either CNC Machining, Electronics, Radiation Protection or certification in a skilled technical trade would be an asset.
  • Strong math skills are required to ensure accuracy with Nuclear Accounting.
  • Reliability and attendance records of applicants will be scrutinized and considered in this competition.
Security clearance eligibility required: Level 2 Secret which has a minimum requirement of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom.
