Job Description

What it's like working at CBC/Radio-Canada

At CBC/Radio-Canada, we create content that informs, entertains and connects Canadians on multiple platforms. Our successes and accomplishments are driven by embodying and upholding values, which include creativity, integrity, inclusiveness and relevance.

Do you think you have the ability and drive to keep up with this exciting, ever-changing industry? Whether it be in front of the camera, on air, online or behind the scenes, you would be joining a team that thrives on making connections and telling stories that are important to Canadians.

Your role

Are you a scientist with a keen interest in making science accessible to all?

Smaller market stations in Ontario are looking for a science communicator based on or near a Great Lake in the province with an ability to tell a broad range of stories about climate change.

You're committed to ensuring young and diverse voices are heard and exploring a range of perspectives and lived experiences in your storytelling.

You'll cover events, interview scientists and translate technical articles beyond your own field of expertise. You will be producing solutions-based stories for digital, radio and television. You are naturally inquisitive, but with enough skepticism to question how real or practical scientific solutions are. You are always asking "why do people care?"

You are open to an editorial process that challenges your facts, and your work will adhere to CBC's Journalist Standards and Practices. You don't necessarily have to have a journalism background, but you must have a keen willingness to learn new tools and techniques for telling stories.

You're as comfortable speaking with a scientist as you are a stranger in a coffee shop. You are able to talk about complex issues in a clear, and simple way. You're passionate about engaging in conversation, in person or on-line and have a portfolio that supports your public engagement.

You're a self-starter, who is comfortable working with a virtual team.

This is a five month opportunity (November 2022 - March 2023) for a scientist living in a Great Lakes community. We'll partner you with a CBC location in Windsor, London, Kitchener-Waterloo, Hamilton, Sudbury or Thunder Bay - depending upon your proximity to those cities. Ideally, you're a recent graduate from a science stream at a post-secondary institution.

If you're interested, please send a cover letter describing three stories you'd first like to tackle (no longer than 2 pages), along with your resume and any links to blogs, social streams or personal websites that will set you apart from the competition to . Deadline to submit your expression of interest is October 28, 2022 12:00 noon ET. Please include Science Communicator Expression of Interest in your subject line.
