Tasks

Evaluate the effectiveness of social programs Interview client individually, in families, or in groups, to assess their situation and problems to determine the types of services required Provide mediation services Supervise other social workers, paid para-professional staff, student trainees and volunteers Perform administrative tasks Plan programs of assistance for clients Refer clients to agencies that provide financial assistance, legal aid, housing, medical treatment and other services Provide public education and consultation regarding counselling services, issues and methods Serve as a member of an interdisciplinary team of professionals working with a client group Advocate on client's behalf in courts or at hearings Lobby for solutions to problems affecting client groups Conduct social research Apply for social program funding Deliver presentations at conferences, workshops or symposia Provide consultation services to government and other organizations Evaluate the effectiveness of counselling and the patient's outcomes Develop prevention and intervention programs to meet community needs Monitor and evaluate Teach students through lectures, discussions, audio-visual presentations and laboratory, shop and field studies Answer inquiries from students
