Job Description


Overview

Under the direction of the Manager, Engineering Design, to support capital projects, provide designs for SCADA, Automation and related Communications and Electrical systems for power generation, substations, system operations (Jackfish Control Centre), residual heating, renewable energy, and other systems. Scope includes all communities, building, plants, and facilities in NTPC\xe2\x80\x99s Hydro Zone including the North and South Slave, the Thermal Zone and customer or IPP-owned facilities. Technologies include thermal, hydro, Wind, Solar and other renewable generation technologies. Complies with NAPEG, Engineering design standards and processes, and supports needs and complies with processes of Asset Management, Engineering, Project Management and other NTPC groups.

Responsibilities

  • Supports Asset Management, Engineering and Project Management with identification, definition, design and implementation of capital projects. Prepares project briefs. Supports capital projects by providing engineering design services and technical expertise and performing or supporting commissioning during capital project implementation. May be assigned as project monitor for capital projects up to $500,000 in value.
  • Under the direction of the Manager, Engineering Design, prepares preliminary and final detailed designs for the SCADA, Voice-Data Radio and related Communication systems and Automation. Seeks input from Operations and other stakeholders on user requirements and field conditions, selection of standards, type of equipment, equipment specifications, design reviews, implementation methods and processes used to execute projects. Develops and prepares detailed electrical schematics, single-line and three-line drawings, block diagrams, wiring diagrams, flow-charts, equipment layouts and other design drawings, for completion by CAD technicians. Writes commissioning procedures. Prepares technical specifications and cost estimates as required for project briefs, RFPs or other needs. As part of Engineering\xe2\x80\x99s design quality assurance process, performs independent reviews of the design work done by other designers, engineering consultants and CAD technicians.
  • Designs will be appropriate to the requirements of NTPC\xe2\x80\x99s diesel, natural gas and hydroelectric generating stations; solar, wind and other renewable generation; and transmission, distribution and substations. Designs may include: electrical apparatus, engine and generator control systems, protective relaying systems, automation, PLC Programming, SCADA, and related telecommunications systems. Scope includes systems design, specifications, field equipment programming (firmware and software), equipment testing, independent design reviews, drawing checks, and support of commissioning. Designs shall be practical, economical and meet or exceed the latest edition of all applicable codes, standards and regulations.
  • Supports Hydro and Thermal Operations as requested to resolve complex electrical issues and to support investigations, outage analysis, restoration and emergency field repairs.
  • Under the direction of Manager Engineering Design, performs detailed electrical engineering design and analysis work that includes, but is not limited to, new installation, modifications, upgrades, overhauls and replacement of plant main control rooms & control panels (switchgear, etc.), electric motors c/w Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), digital/analog governors, engine-generator sets controller (gensets), instrumentations, exciters, voltage regulators, breakers & associated controls, substations (main & auxiliary transformers, grounding grid, bus work, etc.), station services, lightning protection, lighting layouts, cable trays layouts, cable schedules and any electrical support systems and equipment.
  • Supports Project Management by providing a range of capital project support services. May write or support Requests for Proposal (RFPs). May perform tender evaluations and provide recommendations for contract award. May act as Project Monitor and perform on-site construction supervision/inspection. May perform or witness commissioning. May prepare progress reports, technical reviews and budget variance reports and may support Project Manager with Change Orders, Job Cost Revisions (JCRs) and other project requirements.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s or master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in electrical or computer Engineering and related experience in a utility or industrial setting with SCADA / Automation / Telecommunications / and Controls, with at least five years of electrical utility experience of which two are directly related to diesel and/or hydroelectric power generation. Equivalencies may be considered.
  • Must be registered with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of the Northwest Territories (NAPEG) or eligible to be registered with NAPEG as a Professional Engineer in the NWT.
  • Excellent English communication and writing skills.
  • Ability to work alone, in a team environment, and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Above average interpersonal skills and ability to work in a functional team environment.
  • Strong consultation, organization, and time management skills to ensure work is appropriately prioritized.
  • High-level and intimate knowledge of electrical, electronic, network, protection, PLC, SCADA and communication systems.
  • Knowledge in AutoCAD is a requirement.
  • Class 5 driver\'s license.
  • Must provide a satisfactory criminal record check.
The following skills are desirable:
  • Proven experience with supervisory controls and communications equipment, remote terminal units (ABB RTU560) and power line carrier equipment (ABB ETL680)
  • Proven experience in PLC logic and programming with the following PLCs: Allen Bradley, Modicon, GE Fanuc, Siemens, etc.; and HMI or SCADA programming and configuration of any of the following software packages: Intellution, Survalent, Willowglen, etc.
  • Proven experience in Panel design and layout, bill of materials, and wiring schematic capabilities is expected. The candidate must have experience reading and red-lining PI&D drawings.
  • Accomplished computer skills with MS Office Suite, MS Project, etc. and ability to apply electrical design software (e.g., ETAP, Aspen, SKM Power Tools \xe2\x80\x93 Dapper and Captor).
  • Proven ability to critically review, analyse and interpret highly technical information, designs and consultant reports, including engineering accuracy, cost implications and operational feasibility.
Salary for this position ranges from $59.74/hour - $72.60/hour, plus a location allowance of $3,823 per annum.
