The Snow Sander / Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a skid-steer loader equipped with a sander or material spreader attachment. The primary duty involves applying sand, salt, or other de-icing materials to pavements, parking lots, and walkways to maintain safe traction during winter weather events. This role is critical for ensuring safety and accessibility in winter conditions.
Key Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include operating a skid-steer loader with a sander or spreader attachment to apply materials according to specific job requirements. The operator must perform thorough pre-operation and post-operation inspections of the vehicle and equipment, reporting any mechanical issues or safety concerns immediately. Following designated application routes accurately using provided maps or software is essential. The role requires strict adherence to all safety standards, including the use of proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and maintaining constant awareness of the work environment. Operators are also expected to assist with related manual tasks such as shoveling, lifting heavy bags of material (often over 50 pounds), and basic equipment recovery. Completing necessary job documentation and shift reports is also a required duty.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Candidates must possess a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record. Proven, hands-on experience operating a skid-steer loader is the fundamental requirement for this position. Experience with a sander attachment is a significant advantage but not always mandatory, as the core skills of operating the skid-steer and managing a front-mounted hydraulic attachment are directly transferable from plowing to sanding. The physical ability to work long hours outdoors in extreme cold, to sit for extended periods, and to climb in and out of equipment is necessary. The role demands a dependable individual with reliable transportation, as work is based on weather events. This means availability for on-call shifts during nights, weekends, and holidays is a standard condition of employment.
Work Environment, Schedule & Compensation
This is a seasonal, on-call position. Work is performed outdoors in all winter weather conditions, with most shifts occurring during storms, often at night or in the early morning. Shifts can extend to 12 hours or more during significant weather events.
