A Sample Maker creates sample books that are sent to our customers for ordering purposes. Sample Makers report to the Design Manager.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Sample Book Creation
Cut up new samples and sort by colour and style into decks
Complete sample folders for each new style
Send sample books to Showroom and Sales
Prepare samples as per customer/sales requests
Provide samples to weaving and finishing for loom standards as required
When new colours are added to existing decks, updated decks must be sent to Show Room and Sales with paperwork requesting old sets back
Keep Show Room, Sample Room, and Design Room sample folders updated, and check occasionally for wear and tear
Box up extra fabric, place on appropriate shelf for future use and enter location into database
Sample Book and Yardage Management
Maintain computer database of yardage and sample books in Sample Room
Keep samples sorted, dusted, and in good condition
Receive stock sample yardage from finishing in a timely fashion and compare against sample folders to ensure info is correct, and confirm colour is in folder and that colour is on standard
Always keep a base stock of fabric books ready, replenishing as needed. Alert Design Manager when running low
Self-track levels of fabric in inventory and cull once a year to make room
Keep track of true sampling fabrics and yarns that don't have standard style of colour information
Ensure retainment of all paperwork used to create new styles for future need
Weaving
Locate weaves on EP Server, upload to key and download to loom
Inform appropriate people in Weaving about required loom for sampling and approximate time and yardage needed
Keep appropriate people informed on sample weaving needs
Weave all required sample lengths as instructed by Design Manager, comparing colours against yarn cards to ensure proper yarn usage at loom
Sample information is to be clearly marked with fabric pens on sample fabric
Woven samples to be given to mending with proper tickets/written paperwork
Work with Mending Department to ensure samples are mended and marked correctly before releasing to Finishing
Keep all paperwork, alerting Design Manager of changes when they occur
Finish Department Fabric Samples
Several times a week gather fabric samples from inspection
Cut 8.5 x 11" pieces and label with attached tickets, stapling matching pieces together
Deliver to Finishing Manager's office
Quality Control for External Yarn SAMPLES FOR APPROVAL
Inspect external yarn sample skeins sent by supplier to approve for production - check for colour/look/sheen etc. against standards
Email external suppliers immediately with approvals for production, or changes needed, cc'ing appropriate people
Keep all samples (approved or otherwise) with appropriate notes on yarn cards located in sample room
Contact Sample Room Manager if there are issues regarding colour/look/sheen etc.
Quality Control for External Yarn PRODUCTION DELIVERED BY YARN DEPT.
Take appropriate length skeins from cones provided by Yarn Department and weigh. Compare against weights and allowed variances in computer
Compare against standard on yarn board for colour, weight, texture and overall look of yarn in yarn books
If okay, place sample with date, lot #, etc. on yarn card and return yarn to Yarn Department and enter details.
If there are problems with weight, look, texture or colour - retest if needed, bring findings to Design Manager, as per training
Weight variances must be recorded and given to Design Manager for entry against yarns in computer
File and upkeep yarn cards
Quality Control for Entangled In-House Yarn
Take appropriate length skeins from cones provided by Yarn Department and weigh. Compare against weights and allowed variances in computer
Compare against standard on yarn board for colour, weight, texture, and overall look of yarn
If okay, place sample with date, lot #, etc. on yarn card and return yarn to Entangling. Cut off the excess yarn and give back empty cones for reuse.
If there are problems with weight, look, texture or colour - retest if needed, bring findings to Design Manager, as per training
Weight variances must be recorded and given to Design Manager for entry against yarns in computer
File and upkeep yarn cards
Yarn Management
Collect all stock yarn needed for sampling, keeping lists of where yarn came from in stock
Return stock yarn using list to ensure yarn is replaced in correct lots
Complete yarn allocation sheets for stock yarn used and give to Yarn Handler in a timely fashion
Store sample cones from special projects for further use
When new stock yarns come in make yarn cards for sample room, and add a skein to master yarn card in design room with colour number and date
Coordinate with Entangling for sample entangled yarn needed for weaving
Supply Management
Keep track of cardboards, double-sided tapes, plastic covers, sample book stickers, Chicago screws, dies for hole punch, etc., and alert Design Manager in a timely manner of supplies needed
Serging
Use of serging machine in mending necessary for drapery samples
Health and Safety
Utilize personal protective equipment listed:
+ 8" (20.32 cm) CSA approved steel toe boots
+ Hearing Protection Devices (HPD) when applicable
+ Safety Glasses when using compressed air Adhere to generic and department specific WHMIS principles
+ Department specific training will be provided Complete pre-shift inspections and document as requested by your department manager
Follow safety procedures reviewed with you during orientation and training
Report unsafe acts and plant deficiencies/defects to your manager
Compliance with all company policies and procedures reviewed with you during orientation, training and departmental meetings
Responsible for keeping floors, equipment and tools clean, walkways open and department tidy
General Requirements
Work independently and with co-workers
Perform tasks in accordance with instruction given by your manager
Advise manager immediately if there are mechanical or product issues
Direct questions and concerns to your manager
Share expertise by training co-workers as required
Physical Demands
The physical demands of a Sample Maker would be considered Medium Work
Frequency of bending, reaching, lifting, pulling and pushing are dependent upon daily task requirements
Independently lift up to 50 lbs (22.7 kg)
+ A lift of 50 lbs (22.7 kg) is rare, with the average being 20 lbs (9 kg) or less
+ Request assistance when weights exceed 50 lbs (22.7 kg), or when items are awkward, or when there is increased frequency of lifting during a particular shift
Environment
Plant walkways may be uneven or have temporary cracks
Floors are wet with water in certain areas of the plant due to the processing of yarn and fabric
Factory environment may be dusty
High noise levels have been identified in certain areas of the plant
Temperatures fluctuate due to doors that frequently open and shut and operation of some equipment
Emission of fumes for forklifts
There may be sharp edges on machinery, tools and product
Shifts
Current Shifts
+ Monday to Friday, 7 am to 3 pm Production demands may result in changes to the above, which may impact your shift
+ Either by a change to the shift hours or working overtime hours
+ You will be provided with as much notice as possible Must remain flexible
Minimum Qualifications
English Language Skills - Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing
+ Intermediate - understanding and creating moderately complex spoken and written communication in moderately demanding situations of language use within the four areas
+ Ability to proficiently identify and read reports, work instructions, schedules, tickets and labels Computer Skills
+ Intermediate - basic skills, plus: locate and retrieve files in various directories, create, open, save and close files/folders, print documents, recognize file formats, rename and delete files, use/troubleshoot peripheral devices (i.e. scanners)
- Daily use of: Word, Outlook, Excel, Foxpro and File-Maker Strong attention to detail, with the ability to detect shade, weight and texture variances in materials
Demonstrated problem solving skills, displaying ability to analyze varying information and act accordingly
Proficient organizational skills needed to manage multiple tasks
Ability to self-start and use forward thinking to ensure what you are doing today will enhance department efficiency in the future
Eligible to work under Canadian laws regarding age restriction
Legally entitled to work in Canada
Willing to participate in all required training
Sample Maker experience or equivalent experience with quality control
7AM - 3PM
