JOB PURPOSE:

This role is key to the coordination of administrative, quality, and educational/research functions within Day Surgery/DOSA, PACU, Pre-Operative clinic and Endoscopy Suite Working closely with the Nurse Manager and entire Program Team, the Assistant Nurse Manager supports safe and efficient care delivery in accordance with the philosophy, goals and policies of the Horizon Health Network. The responsibilities of this position may extend to any areas that are under the leadership of the manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrates skills and ability to communicate effectively with other staff, departments and physicians.
  • Demonstrates initiative, critical thinking, results oriented and effective problem solving.
  • 5+ years of clinical practice in acute care setting such as Med/Surg with demonstrated leadership ability and ability to work in the areas of responsibility. Evidence of leadership would include ability to confidently take charge.

  • Demonstrates effective program development and educational programs.
  • Proven leadership skills.

  • Computer program literate, Microsoft Office, Excel, Meditech, Links, I3, Web1000, and Outlook.
  • Bachelor of Nursing Degree from an accredited University. Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the province of New Brunswick.

  • Ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Good work record.
  • Written and spoken competence in English is required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Communication:
  • Demonstrates leadership and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Works collaboratively to maintain an effective relationship with areas noted above and with other departments ie Purchasing, Pharmacy, Organizational Learning, Quality / Risk Management.

Quality Improvement / Risk Management:
  • Assists Nurse Manager in reviews of departmental processes, identification of Quality performance indicators and implementation of methods for improvement in collaboration with the Nurse manager.
  • Assists the Nurse Manager in establishing and monitoring indicators for the Quality Improvement Plan for all areas of responsibility.
  • Assists the Nurse Manager in the development and implementation of an Operational Plan for all areas of responsibility.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement (ie process, practice) and facilitates quality improvement initiatives.
  • Ensures current standards of care and practice are adhered to within departments, through education and development of audits.
  • Assists Nurse Manager in documenting and implementing any changes in order to meet Accreditation requirements (ie standards, ROPs); facilitates meetings re: Accreditation.
  • Completes detailed follow up of incident reports and tracks for quality improvement.
  • Performs chart audits as required for QA. Assists manager in developing an action plan based on results when necessary.
  • Conducts safety walks within the department; documents results and completes follow up with actionable items if required. Reports results monthly to the Nurse Manager.
  • Assists with the compilation and analysis of departmental statistics and the integration of that data into QI reports.
  • Assists with monthly budget reports.
  • Member of Accreditation Team
Patient Care:
  • Assists Nurse Manager in development and revision of departmental Policies and Procedures for all areas of responsibility,
  • Takes on work assignments in DOSA/PACU/Endoscopy Suite/Pre-Operative Clinic and Day Surgery to assist staff with breaks and high acuity patients as required.
  • Maintains ability to work in each area of responsibility when required due to staffing needs.
  • Ensures Nursing Practice and Documentation Standards are followed by all staff.
  • Must be able to work in all areas of this department which includes PACU, DaySurgery/DOSA, The Pre-Operative Clinic and the Endoscopy Suite.
Staff Development:
  • Ensures the mandatory competencies required for the five departments are current (i.e. CPR, elearning recertifications, ACLS, Advanced Nursing Practice, Delegated Medical Functions, and Code Blue) and maintains a record for month end/annual reports.
  • Assists Nurse Manager with performance appraisals.
  • Develops and maintains DOSA/PACU/Endoscopy Suite/Pre-Operative Clinic and DaySurgery competency based orientation program and performance review document.
  • Assists the Nurse Manager with the development of orientation program for staff in all areas of responsibility.
  • Ensures all staff receive education/training for new equipment, drugs, and supplies.
  • Develops educational programs for staff using SKYLINE and in collaboration with staff and Organizational Learning.
Equipment Maintenance:
  • Orders supplies and inventory, electronically through Meditech for areas determined by the Nurse Manager.
  • Maintains an electronic inventory of equipment, preventative maintenance checks and does required follow up.
  • Follow up to ensure faulty equipment has been/is removed from patient areas. Ensures equipment is sent to proper location for repair.
Research:
  • Conducts / assists with approved evidence based research projects.
  • Ensures data collected is accurate.
Other management responsibilities:
  • Attends various meetings as needed.
  • Develops and implements long term staffing schedules / rotations based on contract requirements.
