JOB PURPOSEThe Cancer Registrar identifies, codes and stages reportable cancers and tumors by applying rules and entering relevant data into a cancer registry information system. Duties include reviewing client files to determine if sufficient information exists in order to code; consulting pathology, imaging, laboratory reports, physicians and other health care professionals to clarify information pertinent to cancer type, site, stage and treatment; verifying demographic information of patients; applying applicable coding rules and conducting system edits to ensure data quality. The Cancer Registrar is responsible for ensuring complete, accurate and timely cancer information for use by various healthcare agencies. Other duties may include processing mail, scanning and responding to requests for historical information on patients from Oncology Centres. Employees of this classification may be required to provide training and orientation to other personnel, students and healthcare professionals.N.B.
