The Role: Safety Lead (Full-time)




The Safety Lead is responsible for ensuring a safe and compliant work environment across all Trellis locations and programs. This role champions safety initiatives, ensures adherence to Alberta OHS legislation, and provides leadership on hazard prevention, incident management, and safety training. The Safety Lead acts as a trusted advisor to program leaders, ensuring safety is integrated into all operational practices.

Key Duties and Responsibilities



Trellis Safety Program



Champion a safe work culture in accordance with OHS requirements and Trellis standards. Serve as the in-house subject matter expert on Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Maintain current knowledge of safety literature, legislation, regulations and codes of practices and new safety updates rolled out by OHS Provide strategic input and collaborative support on Trellis Emergency Preparedness, Emergency Response and Business Continuity Plans Ensure Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is accurate for each location, updating Safety Data Sheets (SDS) sheets as required Co-chair in the Trellis Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) Support the preparation and presentation of data for review each quarter by the JHSC Create, develop and implement safety-related standards and policies Create, develop and maintain safety newsletters posted on physical and digital safety boards Support agency delivered trainings for Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) and Harm Reduction as required

Incident Prevention and Investigation



Conduct annual and incidental updates to agency-wide Formal Hazard Assessments Facilitate and document Site Specific Hazard Assessments where required Lead incident investigations, performing root cause analysis of all incidents investigated Provide recommendations on policies and procedures updates when the need is identified through incident investigation Provide recommendations on personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment updates when the need is identified through incident investigation Advise on training updates for Trellis training matrixes when the need is identified through incident investigation Collaborate with the Director of Facilities and Asset Management on OHS investigations, including coordination with external agencies when appropriate. Collaborate with internal Trellis teams for program-related safety standards and reports

Knowledge and Skills Expectations



3+ years experience as a Safety Coordinator or similar role with previous experience in a supportive living/childcare/ group care/shelter environment. Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or related field Experience working with professionals serving vulnerable populations. Proficient in language and practices used by trauma informed care givers and non-violent crisis intervenors. Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation will be considered an asset. Advanced knowledge of MS Office 365 (MS Word, Excel, Office). Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Familiar with Certificate of Recognition (COR) criterion. Experienced in quality control and assurance methodologies. Possess a strong sense of integrity, confidentiality and fairness. Police Information Check (PIC) with Vulnerable Sector Search.
