Partnered with Meridia, Maritime Paper is in search of a Safety & Environment Manager to support safety and health management initiatives across Maritime Paper\'s facilities.

Role Description

As the Safety & Environment Manager you will offer visible leadership by directing, coaching, and collaborating with various teams to implement safety plans and programs. The focus is on surpassing regulatory requirements and achieving safety excellence. You will be responsible for ensuring effective environmental compliance, health, safety, and sustainability programs, emphasizing risk management and the continual well-being of the Maritime Paper team members.

  • Health and Safety - Drive safety performance improvements through team member engagement and effective safety management systems. Conduct investigations and root cause analysis, implement preventative measures, establish critical metrics to manage EHS programs and work closely with our Joint Occupation and Health Committees.
  • EHS Team Leadership - Develop internal leadership and technical expertise. Attract and retain the best EHS professionals through effective performance management, succession planning, training, and leadership development.
  • Environmental compliance - Ensure site compliance with provincial regulations, standards, and rules. Stay current on policy changes.
  • Sustainability - Drive safety strategy and execute on site specific projects in line with overall corporate sustainability initiatives.
Your responsibilities will include:
  • Spearheading the development of company-wide annual safety improvement plans, creating a safety strategy that aligns with the 5-year business plan, and ensuring performance improvement objectives are met across various facilities.
  • Drive engagement and communication throughout the organization, fostering continuous improvement in safety compliance across unionized and non-unionized environments.
  • Lead with a commitment to safety compliance, inclusive and harassment-free workplaces, operational excellence, efficiency, teamwork, and people development.
  • Manage the safety team to implement strategic business plans, monitor and report results, and achieve safety operational objectives.
  • Oversight of training programs for technical, trades employees, contractors, and company-wide safety training.
  • Promote safety programs and culture, identifying trends in health and wellness, new safety equipment, and materials.
  • Regular interaction and promotion of positive relations with employees, peers, subtrades, customers, legislative authorities, including Workers Compensation.
  • Conduct annual safety audits, coordinate external audits as required, and maintain corporate accreditation.
  • In pursuit of continuous improvement, research and recommend a hazard identification and incident reporting platform, ensuring the administration, maintenance, and continuous improvement of corporate safety programs in adherence to provincial legislation and company policies and procedures.
  • Travel as required to job locations in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, and PEI.
Your Qualifications

As a safety professional, you are someone who will proactively seek out ways to implement and improve safety programs. Your assertive approach allows you to promptly address unsafe activities or violations, showcasing a proven ability to identify and rectify hazards during job site or facility visits while providing clear direction to site personnel. Your effective communication skills play a key role in garnering organizational buy-in, and you are recognized for establishing trustful relationships across various staff levels.

Your qualifications include:
  • 5+ years of progressive safety management experience within a manufacturing environment; experience managing multiple facilities is a strong asset.
  • Education or certification in Occupational Health & Safety, or a related discipline; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professionals) designation is an asset.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement long-term strategic plans that meet identified business requirements.
  • Experience leading and directing safety, operations or risk management, ideally within a unionized environment.
  • Superior communication and facilitation abilities with a proven ability to form partnerships and leverage diverse perspectives to build and deliver integrated safety solutions.
  • Must hold a valid driver\'s license with the ability to travel throughout the Atlantic provinces.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment with limited resources.
