Help us achieve Vision Zero! The City of Edmonton is committed to creating safe and livable streets for all. We are looking for 2 Engineers in Training (EIT) to join our Safe Mobility team. As an EIT, you will support the implementation of the Safe Mobility Strategy, which aims to achieve Vision Zero - zero traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries - by 2032.
As an EIT, you will work under the supervision of a senior engineer to provide engineering support on various projects that contribute to making Edmonton's streets safer for all users. This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in the field of traffic safety engineering.
What will you do?:
Under the direct supervision of the senior engineer, you will:
Conduct in-depth analysis based on the data provided as well as traffic safety indicators (e.g., collision, speed, volume, road network, near crashes, lived experiences, complaints, technical standards, historical context related to previous work completed) to diagnose the problem specific to the particular safety concerns associated with a project
Apply national guidelines to complete geometric analysis (e.g., horizontal and vertical alignments, cross-sectional elements) as well as operational analysis (e.g., considering signal phase diagrams, intersection level of service, capacity performance) and their impacts on the safety performance at this location
Use best practice and evidence based research to recommend the appropriate safety countermeasures to be installed to address the frequency and severity of the identified issue
Create collision modification factors for City of Edmonton (this includes accounting for contributing factors to ensure that the assessment is accurate and isolates the impact of the implemented measure)
Collaborate and support multi-disciplinary teams consisting of consultants, contractors, business partners and stakeholders, assign responsibilities for project work related to analysts, engineering techs, internal and external to the organization
Support the planning & design and/or delivery of capital projects including operational/strategic initiatives, project timelines/resources and project budgets
Document all project activities in accordance with the Project Management methodology, City policies, processes and procedures, as well as regulatory and legislative requirements
Participate in the procurement and contract processes, including tender documents, review of proposals/bids, and make recommendations for acceptance
Represent the Safe Mobility section by presenting research findings in professional, public and educational settings (e.g., presentation at the Transportation Research Board, Canadian Multidisciplinary Road Safety Conference, Transportation Association of Canada, University of Alberta, Institute of Transportation Engineers, etc).
Represent the Safe Mobility Session in a collaborative and integrated fashion with internal and external stakeholders
Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
:Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering
Membership with APEGA as Engineer-in-Training (EIT) and working towards a P.Eng is a requirement. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment
Experience in traffic engineering, geometric design, transportation planning or engineering traffic safety evaluations
Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, and customer service skills
Understanding and adherence to all APEGA regulations and standards as it relates to an Engineer-in-Training status
Skills required for success:
Demonstrated knowledge of statistical methods and tools for the evaluation of engineering traffic safety measures
Knowledgeable about Transportation Association of Canada guidelines, city standards and methods of procurement
Demonstrated knowledgeable of traffic safety management processes
Demonstrated ability to analyze complex technical information
Demonstrated skills working in multi-disciplinary environment
Ability to translate strategy into operational processes, approaches, and competencies
Demonstrated ability to apply technical expertise to anticipate, identify and resolve issues that may impact the project
Ability to apply systems thinking to manage multiple ongoing and concurrent projects, leveraging existing resources and ensuring successful delivery of the project outcomes
Establish, demonstrate and hold others accountable to the values of the Department, Branch, Section and Unit
Fosters a culture of collaboration and networking amongst project teams, across the corporation and beyond
Negotiation and presentation skills
General competence in Microstation/AutoCad/Geo-media/GIS databases, Google Suite and Microsoft Office

Assets:
Undergraduate course work in road safety engineering, or statistical analysis techniques related to traffic safety
Conditions of Employment: Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Must obtain business auto insurance for personal vehicle use on City business
Work Environment:
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52.
The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
