The Engineer will perform key duties associated with engine and propulsion, power systems, and auxiliary equipment aboard the Moses Appaqaq, a 31.4m (103ft) 340GT multipurpose 100% Inuit owned research platform conducting both inshore, nearshore and occasionally offshore fisheries science, ocean science, seabed mapping, fisheries and environmental surveys, and oceanographic research, in the Atlantic waters in, around and in between Newfoundland and Labrador and Nunavut.
The Moses Appaqaq is part of a growing fleet of research vessels that Qikiqtaaluk Corporation will own and operate. Although not required, having experience working in arctic environments would be an asset. This vessel will mobilize in and out of Holyrood or another site on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland and Labrador and will primarily serve the Qikiqtani region of Nunavut during the ice-free season, and Newfoundland and Labrador and potentially the Maritimes during the shoulder seasons.

Responsibilities
Engine watch, maintenance and log-keeping, troubleshooting and repair of all onboard systems and equipment, while complying with appropriate safety and environmental protocols and procedures.
(Co-)management of pre-departure preparations, operations planning, identifying and supporting the selection and procurement of new equipment, off-season maintenance and management of related service contracts during the offseason.
Supporting on-the-job crew training and community outreach initiatives aboard the vessel.
Qualifications and Certifications (Required under Transport Canada Regulations)
3rd class Engineer ticket, or 4th class with substantial experience; or 3-year approved cadet training program in marine engineering or having acquired at least 36 months of qualifying service.
Maritime Experience Requirements
12 months experience as a marine engineer on a 100 to 200ft fishing vessel, research vessel, or workboat.
Proficient knowledge in marine engineering, ship construction and stability and general ship knowledge and seamanship.
Physical Fitness. Physical capability to perform duties on deck and complete a 12 hour shift.
Specialized Knowledge Requirements
Regulatory knowledge, including familiarity with Canadian maritime regulations, navigational protocols, safety standards, emergency procedures, and environmental guidelines.
Marine emergency duties, including current and valid advanced firefighting, first aid, and CPR certification.
Proficiency with design software, including Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) and other marine design tools.
Security Awareness Training for Seafarers.
STCW Basic vessel safety (Standards of Training, Certifications) & WHMIS.
Understanding of safety equipment and recertification.
Training in Safety Management Systems.
Training in onboard sewage treatment system.
Training in air conditioning systems.
Working knowledge of winches, net drums, deployment and retrieval.
Working knowledge of crane.
Strong knowledge of vessel systems including ship propulsion, power generation, safety systems, and overall vessel operations is essential.
Experience with the maintenance and repair of marine equipment and machinery.

Pay: $110 000 - 150 000 per year plus comprehensive benefits, commensurate with experience.
