Expertise is offered in areas ranging from ocean observation and ocean mapping to remotely operated vehicles and the operation of autonomous and uncrewed surface and underwater technologies. The Centre operates and maintains the SmartAtlantic ocean observing system consisting of a subsea node and a series of met/ocean buoys throughout Atlantic Canada. The observing system also serves as a host network supporting the development and testing of innovative ocean instruments.Ocean vehicles are an important component of the day-to-day operations of the CTec team, as well as a primary applied research focus area. The ROV Pilot - Ocean Technology Specialist will be an integral part of the team with the core responsibility for ROV related activities. MIs flagship ROV is a Forum Energy Technologies Mohican, equipped with a manipulator skid, operated through a Tether Management System (TMS) and a Launch and Recovery System (LARS) via a 20\xe2\x80\x99 Control Cabin (configured for 2000 m dives). Other vehicles in the fleet include a SAAB Seaeye Falcon, SEAMOR Chinook, Outland 1000, and Deep Trekker Pivot.The position is located at The Launch, in Holyrood, NL, the Marine Institute\xe2\x80\x99s state-of-the-art ocean-side applied research and learning complex.DUTIES
The primary responsibility of the successful applicant will be the safe operation of ROVs and the ancillary systems in an efficient manner. In addition to, integrating, testing, calibrating, troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing electronic, electrical, optical, acoustic, mechanical, and hydraulic components, systems, and sub-systems. * Assist with expedition logistics and dive plans.

  • Coordinate and execute vessel mobilization and demobilization.
  • Maintain operating, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, health and safety, and quality assurance procedures.
  • Follow the International Marine Contractors Association\xe2\x80\x99s (IMCA) \xe2\x80\x98Guidance for the safe and efficient operation of remotely operated vehicles\xe2\x80\x99 and other relevant IMCA guidelines.
  • Design tooling and sampling skids.
There will be a requirement for at-sea expeditions on Marine Institute or client\'s vessels, both near shore and remote offshore areas in harsh environments. Expedition time may vary from a few hours to a few weeks. An element of travel within and outside Newfoundland and Labrador can be expected.The individual will work as part of a team of engineers, technologists and researchers undertaking applied research and industry outreach initiatives for a diverse internal and external client base in areas that include ocean mapping and monitoring, offshore energy, marine transportation, and fisheries and aquaculture. Through project management, the successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to or lead the development of project concepts, proposal development, budgeting, and reporting.Although the position is ROV focused, you will also have the opportunity to contribute to a technical team responsible for the maintenance, deployment and operation of other marine vehicles such as Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASVs) and Uncrewed Underwater Vehicles (UUVs), as well as oceanographic instrumentation. This includes hardware/firmware/software maintenance; troubleshooting, diagnosing and repairing common problems with marine equipment, oceanographic buoys, sensors, cables and connectors.There may also be opportunities to teach courses in the School of Ocean Technology\xe2\x80\x99s academic programs.QUALIFICATIONSThe ideal candidate will have an engineering or technology-based degree supported by 4+ years\xe2\x80\x99 work experience in an ocean technology industry with substantial experience piloting light work class ROVs through a Tether Management System and a Launch and Recovery System.Experience mobilizing, demobilizing and working with the equipment required to support ROV operation; ROV, TMS, LARS, control cabin, etc. This includes integrating, testing, calibrating, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing electronic, electrical, optical, acoustic, mechanical, and hydraulic components, systems, and sub-systems. * Familiar with IMCA ROV guidelines.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite - Word/Excel/PowerPoint.
  • Familiar with Computer Aided Design software (CAD)
  • Possession of a valid class 5 driver\xe2\x80\x99s license as issued by the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador
