The Roads & Equipment Utilities Worker supports roads construction and maintenance through skilled labour and equipment operation. Primary duties include operating loaders, plowing, sanding, and clearing roads during winter, as well as routine equipment maintenance.
General responsibilities include performing and assisting with road maintenance and construction tasks, assisting Engineering Aides and performing semi-survey work to gather layout information, and cross-training to support facilities construction projects. The work also involves driving heavy equipment and company fleet vehicles to transport materials and supplies, operating various heavy equipment and power tools, and performing seasonal maintenance as assigned.
The worker is responsible for completing documentation such as equipment maintenance logs, pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and hazard/safety assessments to ensure job and equipment safety. Success in this role requires knowledge of road infrastructure and the use of reference materials such as policies, procedures, manuals, and WHMIS guidelines. Other related duties as assigned.
Valued Qualifications
Experience:
3 years experience working with and driving heavy equipment.
Previous experience using 1-ton plowing, small loader and large loader
Knowledge:
Training in heavy equipment and loader operations
Mechanical aptitude and general knowledge of general equipment maintenance
Skills:
Good interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
Good organization and time management skills
Abilities:
Ability to manage multiple small projects, switch tasks efficiently, and meet deadlines
Ability to listen, engage, ask questions, and think critically
Other (required):
Mature individual who understands the nature of safety sensitive work.
Compliance with BC Immunization program and TB Screening
Satisfactory completion of a police information
Ability to provide own transportation to work
Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and Drivers Abstract
Air brake endorsement
Optional (assets):
H2S, OFA1 with TE, WHMIS, OHS, Fall Protection, Ladder and Scaffold, Confined Space Entry, Traffic Control Persons ticket/certificate.
ICBC heavy trailer endorsement (Code 20)
Ability to speak Dene and/or Cree.
Work Setting
May be scheduled for work as early as 4:00 a.m. during winter months. Regular schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 35 hours per week. Flexible schedules may be required from time to time. This worker participates in rotational standby shifts for call back to work duty. There is a requirement to wear safety boots and PPE. Regularly drives heavy equipment and a company owned fleet vehicle to transport materials and supplies.
