The Traffic Engineering & Road Safety team of the Department of Public Works directly impacts the quality of traffic engineering efficiency and road safety engineering operations in the province. We develop and ensure comprehensive standards, policies, procedures, and programs are in place to mitigate injury and collisions on Nova Scotia\'s highways.

Our team is comprised of professional staff who develop and manage various policies and programs, collect collision and traffic census data, conduct engineering studies and analysis, and impact traffic control devices, legislation, and regulations.

About Our Opportunity

As the Road Safety Engineer, you report directly to the Manager of Traffic Engineering and Road Safety. You have the important responsibility of ensuring the quality management and analysis of motor vehicle accident records which provide a measurement of provincial highway safety performance.

Primary Accountabilities

You are directly involved in:

  • analyzing vehicle collision records;
  • fatal and serious injury collision investigations;
  • identification and evaluation of road safety infrastructure deficiencies and countermeasures;
  • the development and implementation of a road safety management system;
  • the development of legislation, regulations, standards, policies and procedures with respect to road safety; and
  • leading road safety audits and reviews.
The Road Safety Engineer provides road safety leadership and technical support services to other Department staff and represents the Department on provincial and national road safety committees.

Qualifications and Experience

A Bachelor\'s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited engineering institution is required. You must be (or meet the requirements to be) actively registered as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Full Member (P.Eng) with Engineers Nova Scotia (ENS).

Travel is a component of this position. As such, you must have a valid driver\'s license and ability to travel.

It is considered an asset if you have previous experience or expertise with:
  • transportation engineering principles, project management, engineering economic and statistics, and construction;
  • road safety management systems, and computer aided design and drafting software; and
  • relational databases such as Microsoft Access, SQL Server and Cognos (including reporting, analysis, data querying, and exporting of data).
A working knowledge of the AASHTO Highway Safety Manual, TAC Design Guide, the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada, the Public Highways Act, and the Motor Vehicle Act are further assets to be considered.

As the successful candidate you are known to be an effective leader and communicator with excellent organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills. You are highly motivated and able to work independently on complex, detailed studies and to present technical information clearly and succinctly both in written and verbal formats.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

A majority of your time will be spent in an office environment, but site visits will be required during all seasons and various weather conditions on heavily-travelled roads or in rough, isolated areas of construction sites.

Additional Information

An Engineer must be \xe2\x80\x9cLicensed to Practice\xe2\x80\x9d as determined by Engineers of Nova Scotia (ENS) before being classified as an Engineer 3.

Pay Grade: PR 08 - PR 15

Salary Range: $2,074.62 - $3,348.16 Bi-Weekly
