Research across UHN\'s seven research institutes spans the full spectrum of diseases and disciplines, including cancer, cardiovascular sciences, transplantation, neural and sensory sciences, musculoskeletal health, rehabilitation sciences, and community and population health. .

The Animal Resource Centre Resource Veterinary Technician will be a leadership role within the site and will provide functional supervision to Veterinary Technicians and Animal Care Support workers under the direction of the Site Supervisor and functions in all aspects of providing technical services for research personnel and operations of animal research facilities. This position supports the Site Supervisor with all aspects of daily operations within the ARC Facility and must be familiar with the job description of Veterinary Technician (animal husbandry, health monitoring, and technical services). The role assumes a higher level of responsibility and technical expertise in order to provide depth within the department and Site and better support our research community. In compliance with the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC), Ministry of Agriculture (OMFRA) and UHN Institutional Guidelines, the responsibility of the Resource Veterinary Technician is to oversee daily operations within their assigned area working closely with the Facility Supervisor, Manager and/or Clinical Veterinarian.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensures daily operations around husbandry and animal care is complete as per Department SOP. Reports any deviations to ARC site supervisor and/or Attending Veterinarian.
  • Advises Supervisor, Manager and/or attending veterinarian of any issues in regards to animal health and welfare or research procedures
  • Carries out, as required, specialized technical and animal care duties: for example socializing various species specific models such as non-human primates, engaging animals in training for reward and behavioral testing
  • Assists the Supervisor and/or Manager in maintaining a safe working environment; reporting immediately any deficiencies or unsafe working conditions
  • Functions as a team leader in specific areas, under direction of the Supervisor to ensure daily schedules and work assignments are carried out
  • Trains, as required, new staff members, ensuring departmental policies, procedures and SOPs are understood and carried out
  • Performs cross functional and administrative duties as assigned or requested
Qualifications
  • B.Sc. and/or graduate from recognized two or three year Veterinary Technician program or equivalent discipline
  • Registration with CALAS as an RLAT mandatory
  • Minimum four (4) years as a Laboratory Animal Veterinary Technician or related experience within a research animal facility
  • Experience handling multiple species of laboratory animals
  • Experience in specialized technical and animal care duties, including anesthetic maintenance and surgical procedures
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • No known allergies to animals
  • Exercise initiative and time management skills
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Exercise initiative and good judgement with ability to multi-task
  • Compliance with confidentiality requirements
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines
