As the Resource Nurse or Resource Person (RP) in the Operating Room, you will provide support within the Operating Room's daily function working independently as well as collaboratively as part of the interprofessional team. Reflecting Humber River Health's values by demonstrating and providing patient- and family-centred care within the scope of practice identified by the ORNAC standards and the College of Nurses of Ontario. The Resource Nurse contributes to the day-to-day function of the service working alongside the Clinical Coordinator and Manager to support the effectiveness of staffing as well as equipment for efficiency within the service daily operation. The daily assignment for the role will include supporting the daily operational needs of the service, providing leadership as well as direct patient care. You will work with the Clinical Practice Leader to support the learning needs of the OR staff and students rotating through the service.

Hours of Work: 8 hour day shifts from Monday to Friday, including possible on-call - subject to change as per Article B - Management Functions

Responsibilities:
Clinical Practice

• Adherence to hospital policies and procedures, ORNAC standards, and infection control practices and maintaining current best practices within the service
• Maintain the integrity of service specific instrumentation and equipment, co-ordinating repairs with the supply chain coordinator, OR Manager and MDRD
• Facilitating the clinical needs of the surgeons' within the service a) collaborate with the Division Head and other surgeons within the service to implementing best practices, introduce new products and maintain instruments and equipment.
• Handling specimens according to policy

• Responding appropriately to urgent/emergency situations
• Ensuring measures are taken to prevent physical injury to the patient related to positioning, chemical/electrical injury, retention of foreign bodies, and transfer/transportation of the patient.
• Maintain service stock and supplies by notifying supply chain coordinator, OR Manager and MDRD of needed items.
• Work with other OR Resource nurses to promote team work

• Supporting and covering other resource nurses
• Working with other RP to standardize practices amongst all services
• Participating in QA of surgical supplies and instruments in your service
• Maintain skills for scrubbing and circulating as per operational needs

Patient Care

• Identify, with staff, areas for improvement of patient care within the Surgical Program, the Operating Room as a whole, and the specific surgical service.
• Utilizes effective communication skills with all members of the surgical team, the patient, and patient family members.
• Promote safe and quality patient care by:

• Practicing and monitoring aseptic technique and other infection control practices including body Substance Precautions
• Recognizing and acting appropriately to correct breaks in aseptic technique.
• Identifying and managing situations, materials and/or equipment that may be hazardous to the patient or surgical team members
• Practice and facilitating staff member adherence to safety policies and procedures related to radiation, laser devices and biohazardous materials.
• Facilitate co-ordination of daily activities of the service by:

• Mutually arranging scrub and circulating roles with staff member (s) assigned to the service
• Co-ordinating breaks/lunch for the room and relieving staff as necessary
• Communicating list changes to staff, surgeon, anaesthetist and Clinical Coordinator
• Ensuring efficient and effective flow of room activities, including room turn-over
• Performs the scrub and circulating nurse roles, as appropriate to the needs of the service and the members of the surgical team.

Educational Responsibilities

• Facilitate staff education by:

• creating and maintaining preference cards and service resource manuals with explanation of instrumentation, procedure, and regular routines of the service
• identifying learning needs of staff members and appropriate resources to address the learning needs
• Coordinating with CPL (Clinical Practice Leader) to provide in-servicing of new equipment and new procedures within the service.
• Identifying learning opportunities for staff members to gain needed skills and experience

• Identifying in-service needs to the CPL
• Sharing knowledge, skills and experience with staff members.
• Facilitate the professional development of staff members through providing constructive performance feedback, in both informal and formal methods. Informally, through discussion of performance with the staff member. Formally, through providing performance feedback to the Manager for the Performance Appraisal process, and the CPL for identifying and addressing learning needs.
• Facilitate rotations of new staff members and students in collaboration with CPL to service area and providing feedback to the new staff member, Manager and Practice Leader for evaluation purposes.

Non-Clinical Responsibilities

• Informs manager of any relevant issues related to patients, families or staff
• Leads daily Patient Quality & Safety Huddles with the interdisciplinary team
• Ensures staff provide factual, timely information/documentation to Manager regarding patient/staff incidents/equipment malfunction
• Ensures equipment on the unit is maintained in good working order participates in Continuous Quality Improvement
• Ensures safety issues are dealt with promptly by initiating maintenance requisitions
• Assists Manager with staffing (i.e. replacement for sick calls, schedule changes, etc.) ensuring appropriate composition of staff is available to meet patient care needs for the upcoming weeks
• Other duties as assigned by the Manager

Qualifications:

• Baccalaureate degree in Nursing preferred
• Current Registered Nurse registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing
• Minimum 5 years experience in Operating Room (OR); Two years recent/related experience in clinical specialty or equivalent education and experience within the last five years
• Familiar with Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC) standards
• Previous experience as an Resource Nurse/Person (RP) preferred
• Perioperative certification required
• Maintains current speciality certifications for related clinical area
• BCLS certification or equivalent
• Related CNA Certification, specialty certification (if appropriate) from accredited program preferred
• Leadership experience
