Duties


Duties:
  • Supervise and support watercraft inspection staff, including managing staff schedules, training, and OHS requirements;
  • Provide logistical expertise at the watercraft; inspection/decontamination stations by monitoring the work and acquiring and maintaining equipment and supplies;
  • Participate in monitoring field work in accordance with established procedures and protocols to support the aquatic invasive species and Resource Conservation monitoring programs;
  • Collect, enter, and organize data, including performing Quality Assurance / Quality Control procedures;
  • Conduct watercraft inspections and decontaminations on watercraft and water related equipment, following established protocols and OHS requirements;
  • Provide guidance to visitors and Parks staff on prevention of aquatic invasive species, and advise visitors of infractions and assist with possible solutions;
  • Provide technical feedback, input, and reporting to the supervisor on all tasks undertaken in the program;
  • Support Resource Conservation programs, projects, and activities, including Visitor Safety program;
  • Foster an awareness among visitors of the importance of healthy aquatic ecosystems and the human connection to nature;
  • Address complaints from visitors, escalating complex or difficult situations to supervisor and/or law enforcement;
  • Identify and solve problems, including preparing incident reports;
  • Contribute to a workplace culture that promotes diversity and inclusion.

Work environment

Riding Mountain National Park is located in Treaty 2 Territory, the Anishinabe homelands, where we work with the Coalition of First Nations with Interests in Riding Mountain National Park to foster positive and collaborative relationships to protect and present the natural and cultural heritage for all Canadians. Riding Mountain National Park located approximately 3.5 hours north west of Winnipeg, and protects 3,000 square kilometers, of wilderness and is home to a staggering diversity of living things.

Approximately 350,000 of visitors come to Riding Mountain National Park throughout the entire year. Our dynamic and diverse staff work hard to provide our visitors with a memorable experience; whether they prefer to stay in the townsite of Wasagaming to shop and explore, or immerse themselves in nature on our pristine trails and backcountry campsites. We provide our visitors with unique and adventurous experiences in every season so there is always a reason for them to visit the park.

Intent of the process

The results of this process will be used to fill two term vacancies at Riding Mountain Field Unit and may be used in the future to fill permanent or temporary vacancies that may arise at the Resource Management Officer, EG 03 in various locations, with full or part-time hours for various tenures, such as: Indeterminate, Seasonal Indeterminate, Term, Acting Assignment or Assignment at level, depending on status of the selected candidate.

Education
Completion of two years of a post-secondary program related to environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g. biology, ecology, geography), or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience in a field related to the position. Degree equivalency
Experience
  • Experience conducting watercraft inspections for aquatic invasive species;
  • Experience working with public and private groups, First Nations and/or other government agencies.

Additional Education:
  • Completion of a four-year post-secondary degree related to environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g. biology, ecology, geography).
Degree equivalency
Additional Experience:
  • Experience using a variety of data/sample collection equipment and means of transportation;
  • Experience contributing to the preparation of technical/scientific reports and manuscripts drafts, presentations, web site information, public presentation or displays;
  • Experience participating in two (2) or more phases of field research or monitoring projects (design, logistics, synthesis of background information, definition of data/sample collection requirements, data/sample collection, data/sample analysis, presentation of results);
  • Experience in supervising staff.

Additional Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of specialized equipment (mechanical, technical, or scientific) operation and maintenance requirements;
  • Knowledge of Aquatic Invasive Species in Canada, as well as control or decontamination methods;
  • Knowledge of environmental and natural sciences theories and principles.

Additional Abilities:
  • Ability to adapt as required to unexpected conditions;
  • Ability to supervise staff, provide feedback, and resolve conflict.

Operational Requirements:
  • Willingness to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (e.g. all-terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non-motorized vessels) as required.

Reliability Status security clearance
Conditions of Employment:
  • Obtain and maintain Reliability Status;
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 5 Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License;
  • Obtain and maintain valid First Aid and CPR certification;
  • Will be required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks;
  • Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment;
  • Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation;
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial holidays, when required.
