Work environment


The Resource Conservation Manager is one of three managers reporting to the Site Superintendent. The position is responsible for the delivery of programs aligned with the Agency\xe2\x80\x99s mandate for protection, quality visitor experiences and public education.

The Resource Conservation Manager is responsible for the following program elements:
  • Supporting Indigenous cooperative management activities;
  • Environmental and impact assessment;
  • Monitoring and management of natural and cultural heritage resources;
  • Monitoring for Ecological Integrity;
  • Scientific environmental research activities;
  • Visitor safety and occupational health and safety; and
  • Operational planning and implementation activities that support these programs.

The Resource Conservation Manager is expected to carry out the following activities in line with the Agency\xe2\x80\x99s policies and guidelines:
  • Working with Indigenous organizations and individuals;
  • Financial management for procurement, contracting, planning and reporting;
  • Hiring, performance management and training/development of team members;
  • Demonstrating leadership in a variety of team settings;
  • Partnering and engagement to support organizational outcomes; and,
  • Exercising good judgement and critical thinking.

The work duties and program elements are characterized by significant complexity and scope. Past work history, experience, abilities, knowledge and personal suitability attributes will determine how well candidate can perform in this role. Usually, 2 - 3 years of experience in a management position in Parks Canada operations would offer greater potential for success in starting in this role. However, those who have developed practical knowledge of policies, guidelines, time management, critical thinking and who are coachable could be considered candidates that may grow into the role in a relatively short period of time. Operational experience is a strong consideration for this position.
The position must spend time providing managerial support to a team of technicians, ecologists and working along side Indigenous organizations. The park is accessed by air by a one (1) hour flight from Fort Simpson. The position will occasionally travel into the park to see and enjoy the spectacular landscapes, fantastic projects and outstanding team members.

EDUCATION
Graduation with a degree from a recognized university with specialization in natural resource conservation, ecosystem management, or other disciplines relevant to the position.

An acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered if you do not have a university degree. For example, a technical diploma with relevant experience and career advancement in a resource management organization that includes at least three years of supervisory and/or management experience. EXPERIENCE (Recent * experience):
  • Managing complex financial and human resources (e.g., multiple sources of funding, grants and contributions, professional and technical staff);
  • Leading initiatives to develop and/or enhance complex relationships with stakeholders (the relationship is characterized by multiple local and/or regional partners & stakeholders with the possibility of being national in scope, highly sensitive, with broad media attention);
  • Leading a multidisciplinary team within an organization on an organizational or strategic goal or product;
  • Providing strategic advice and guidance to senior managers and staff (of national significance, sensitive, complex, potential for high visibility);
  • Managing complex ecosystem-based programs.
  • Recent experience is defined as depth and breadth of experience gained within the last 2 to 3 years.

KNOWLEDGE
  • Knowledge of Parks Canada\xe2\x80\x99s vision, mandate and corporate objectives especially as they relate to conservation and visitor safety in national parks;
  • Knowledge of key Government of Canada and Parks Canada Acts, policies and programs utilized in management for ecological integrity and natural resource management;
  • Knowledge of major issues, management challenges and/or partnership opportunities related to natural resource conservation management and visitor safety management;
  • Knowledge of Treaty and land claim agreements/negotiations as they relate to cooperative management of Parks Canada places.

ABILITIES
