The Resident Attendant (RA) is the personal care provider for residents within the Long-Term Care setting. The purpose of this position is to provide professional, high quality, holistic care in a manner that considers the resident's physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs. A primary responsibility is to become acquainted with the resident, their hopes, dreams and goals, and work on establishing a relationship with them and their family and making a care plan based upon this.
Working within the philosophy, policies and procedures of Enhanced Living and following the nursing department's established policies and procedures, the Personal Support Worker will use the skills and competencies within their scope of practice in the performance of their work.
As a member of the interdisciplinary nursing team, the RA will receive direction from the RN Supervisor on an ongoing basis.
The RA is an integral member of the nursing care team and is responsible to work to their full scope of practice as outlined in the criteria and tasks below.
QUALIFICATIONS
? A valid Personal Support Worker diploma or Provincial Personal Care Worker course or equivalent
? Ability to work a schedule of flexible hours and shifts inclusive of days, nights, weekends, and holidays
? Valid CPR & First Aid Certification or BLS (required)
? Proficiency in the English language is required
? Previous working experience with elderly in long-term care or a senior living environment an asset

PERFORM CLINICAL DUTIES AS REQUIRED
Moving In, Discharge and Transfer
? Orientate resident / family to home and room
? Care for and secures resident's valuables
Use of Devices and Equipment
? Use equipment that help promote healing, prevent deformities or minimize the effects of immobility
? Use resident lifts with assist of another staff member
? Make beds
? Operate equipment safely ( inspect for any issues prior to using and after use and report any issues to the appropriate personnel)
? Monitor the maintenance, use and cleaning of equipment according to procedures and schedules
? Reapply slings, TED stockings, splints , creams and ointments if deemed by registered staff
Monitor and Assist with Elimination
? Use nursing measures to maintain regular elimination
? Assist resident in use of bedpan, urinal, commode and toilet
? Participate in bowel and bladder training and retraining programs
? Provide catheter care
? Provide ostomy care to established stomas
? Record eliminations on the BM sheet
Assist with Nutrition
? Understand and promote Canada's Food Guide
? Monitor and assist the resident with oral intake as necessary
? Assist in maintaining dietary or fluid restrictions
? Follow safe food handling guidelines in light meal preparation
? Prepare the resident for meals
? Report to RN any feeding concerns
Person Centered Hygiene and Daily Living Support
? Working with the resident as a partner in care, assist with personal care: bathing, oral care, hair care, eye care, nail care (non-diabetics), peri care.
Facilitate independence and coach through activities of daily living.
Monitor and Provide for Protection and Comfort
? Assist and maintain a safe, hazard free and clean resident environment
? Verify resident identification
? Ensure resident accessibility to the call system
? Promote relaxation and sleep
? Develop therapeutic relationships with residents to meet emotional, mental and psychological needs
? Adhere to manual Safe Handling and least Restraint Program
? Remove from room and dispose of soiled incontinent pads
Provide Care during Dying and Death
? Participate in meeting the needs of the dying resident and their family
? Care of the deceased resident, the family and the personal possessions
Provide Safety and Emergency Care
? Be familiar with Fire and Emergency Plans and actively participate in fire and evacuation drills
? Perform basic emergency procedures including CPR (BCLS Level C) first aid and Blocked Airway Clearance
? Practice principles of safety and accident prevention i.e. resident footwear, smoking habits and report any concerns immediately to the Nurse Supervisor.
? Practice standard precautions i.e. Infection Control
? Clean used utensils carts and chairs in accordance to schedules and procedures
? Ensure all safety and security devices are operational
? Maintains a culture of safety within the organization and will be aware of their role in supporting resident safety within the organization
? Remain up to date and current with department and facility policies and processes that support resident safety.
Encourage Mobility
? Perform passive exercises
? Assist and encourage resident to practice active exercise, mobility and range of motion
? Encourage resident to attend recreation activities
? Provide assistance when positioning a resident
? Collaborate with other health team members to deliver special exercise programs
Leadership
? Promote person centered care philosophy
? Assist in the orientation of new RA's
? Participate in facility committees as required
? Share knowledge with peers and co-workers both in informal and formal exchanges
? Attend and participate in staff meetings
