Residence Manager, Student Life

Located in the vibrant city of Saskatoon, the University of Saskatchewan (USask) is one of Canada\'s top research-intensive medical doctoral universities and home to world-leading research of global importance. Primary Purpose: To develop a comprehensive residence life program within the University\'s residence community by implementing evaluating and planning Usask\'s student residence life experience. This involves developing and delivering relevant training/direction/support/coaching to the Residence Life team and community. The RMSL works closely with the Residence Manager Operations and oversees and supports other support positions within residence including the Counsellor in Residence, Faculty in Residence and Elder in Residence. The RMSL connects with student associations including the University of Saskatchewan Students\' Union and Graduate Students\' Association and collaborates with university partners, colleges and administrative units to provide an exceptional residence life experience.

Nature of Work: Reporting to the Director of Consumer Services, the RMSL directly supervises and provides direction to a team of up to 2 Assistant Managers, 5 Residence Coordinators, and 50 student Resident Advisors. The RMSL supports student success by fostering healthy and engaging student communities, managing the response to emergency and crisis situations, and independently investigating reports of disruptions to community standards. At all times, the RMSL upholds and seeks to achieve the Residence Life mission, vision and values. The RMSL role models an efficient, results-oriented, critical-thinking perspective. The RMSL is particular in terms of independently identifying how information should or should not be shared. The RMSL guides students towards appropriate resources. The RMSL champion\'s academic and other educationally purposeful initiatives. The work is complex and requires managing multiple, sometimes simultaneous deadlines and situations. The role requires work in the evening and weekends when required.

Accountabilities:

  • Leads resident life staff in creating a community that is inclusive of all residents across the University residence community, in order to assist students with the transition to University life.
  • Promotes academic success, personal health and well-being, leadership development and involvement in community service.
  • Initiates, develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with a range of internal and external contacts.
  • Treats all sensitive information and materials in a confidential manner.
  • Communicates issues of importance or concern to the immediate supervisor and partners in a timely manner.
  • Collaborates with others as required to complete assignments and support team efforts.
  • Works to resolve conflicts and maintain harmony among co-workers, student life staff and students. Effectively manages assigned projects as directed.
  • Sets priorities for own work and meets deadlines. Complies with all relevant legislation, regulations, policies and procedures. Remains current on all core knowledge required to effectively perform assigned duties.
  • Participates as an active and supportive member of the residence department team.
  • Builds, motivates and supervises a team of part-time student staff. Leads and coaches towards effective performance and service excellence.
  • Responsible for full cycle recruitment of Residence Life student staff which includes job descriptions, interviews, training and onboarding.
  • Organizes and implements the orientation, training, and ongoing development of Residence Life student staff responding to current needs as necessary throughout the year.
  • Provides 24 hour on-call management of staff responding to students in distress, and facilities emergencies.
  • Assist in budget preparation for Student Life and approves departmental programming funds.
  • Develops a year-long outline of educational, recreational, social and wellness programs and initiatives and manages the programming within the community.
  • Directs Student Life team in developing and implementing community-building initiatives that foster inclusive, healthy and engaging student communities
  • Manage the response to emergency and critical incidents, including determining how best to support students who are directly involved and mitigate community impacts.
  • Residence Community Standards: Responsible for the overall development and enforcement of Student Residences\' Community Standards through policy development and implementation.
  • Student Discipline: Develops and determines student discipline outcomes.
  • Liaise with other campus partners and supports who may can support in cases of critical incidents.
  • Guides students toward appropriate campus resources
  • Reviews and assesses all aspects of student life in residence including assessing the effectiveness of previous years\' policies, services and programs.
  • Assist in the review and development of departmental policies and procedures.
Qualifications

Education: Undergraduate degree is required. Preferred disciplines include social work, health promotion or education.

Experience: Three to five years of experience dealing with students and student issues, most recently in a leadership role. Previous experience with student life or residence would be considered an asset. Experience in crisis response and providing mental health support is strongly preferred. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Skills: Demonstrated skills in the following areas: interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal; leadership and team building; community development and program implementation; establishing, interpreting and revising community standards, assessing infractions and implementing disciplinary action; coaching and mentoring; supervising others, including assessing/addressing training needs, implementing change, and measuring success or deficiencies; networking and creating professional relationships; performance management; creative thinking; pro-active and creative problem solving; program development and facilitation in relation to students; and conflict resolution. Demonstrated ability to: respond quickly and judiciously in crisis situations; develop and adhere to budgets; provide leadership and set an example for others; learn and adapt quickly to analyze and meet the changing needs of students; maintain attention to detail; work with youth and the University community as well as outside agencies; work effectively within a community that is widely diverse in culture, age, ability, and family status; and work both independently and in teams. Proven knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and database-operated systems. An understanding of international issues and their impact on the living environment is essential.
