Georgian College's Department of Research and Innovation connects industry and community partners with faculty, students, and expertise to address real-world challenges through applied research. The department fosters innovation, technology adoption, and commercialization, helping partners enhance competitiveness while providing students with meaningful experiential learning opportunities.
In 2024, the department established the Centre of Industrial Simulation and Prototyping, which in 2025 secured significant external funding and the prestigious Technology Access Centre designation. Key Responsibilities:
Duties include but not limited to:
Primary responsibility for the overall intellectual direction of the research, research-related activity or partnership
Uses technical expertise and knowledge of CADD software and FEA Simulation to develop concepts and detailed solutions
Provides deep subject matter and technical expertise for applied research projects
Provides practical and industrial solutions for applied research projects
Ensures execution of applied research projects in collaboration with college faculty, staff and industry partners, and R&I Project Analyst
Executes interdisciplinary research activities relevant to each project and managing integration of the different activities into a cohesive, comprehensive deliverable
Leads funding and project proposal development with input from faculty researchers, Project Analyst, and industry partners.
Develops project proposals and work plans in collaboration with faculty research lead. Project Analyst and industry partners, including specific resource requirements, milestones and deliverables
Attends meetings and presents project scopes, deliverables and metrics
Provides leadership for applied research projects
Prepares and implements dissemination activities, including assisting Research Assistants in the preparation of materials and final reports
Assists college staff and students with development and completion of final reports and collection of metrics
Assists with follow-up activities with industry clients or funders
Presents findings at internal and external events, including conferences and seminars
Assists with the development of case studies
Identifies human resource needs and interviewing / hiring student research assistants
Supervises Student Researchers and Research Assistants/Associates
Qualifications:
Successful completion of a 4-year degree in mechanical, electrical, or software engineering
P. Eng designation required
A Master's degree would be considered an asset
Minimum of
9 years of progressive industry and/or applied research experience
in engineering, simulation, or related fields
Demonstrated expertise with
CADD software, FEA simulation, and advanced engineering tools such as ANSYS and MATLAB
Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
Excellent problem-solving skills with a solutions-focused mindset
Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex technical information to diverse audiences
Collaborative and team-oriented with proven ability to work effectively with industry partners, faculty, students, and staff
Strong leadership and mentoring abilities to guide student researchers and research assistants
Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and fostering a supportive research environment
Experience with applied research project development, funding proposal writing, and stakeholder engagement would be considered an asset
