Position Overview

The Department of Family Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Scientist, Primary Care. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investgiator.

The primary purpose of the position is to manage the day-to-day operations of SAPCReN-CPCSSN work based in Calgary (i.e. staff supervision and performance management, project/network management), while leading an independent research program. The incumbent will be expected to create clear and attainable project objectives, manage constraints of cost, time, scope and quality, assist with strategic planning, and implement daily tasks required to execute the business plan as well as directing staff research activities. Work will include developing research protocols and applications for funding, accessing the SAPCReN-CPCSSN database, conducting analyses and reporting the results. The incumbent will have responsibility to hire, discipline, evaluate, terminate and pay staff/faculty in a research project.

Stress levels of this position are moderate-to-high, as the individual is accountable for performing at a level that is consistent with a senior manager, directing the projects of a skilled research team, and managing a Canada-wide multi-faceted research project.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Financial Administration:
  • Manages all central program budgets and the respective trust accounts for SAPCReN-CPCSSN in collaboration with the DFM Manager, Business Operations
  • Advises and develops financial administrative policies and procedures for SAPCReN-CPCSSN
  • Responsible for ongoing analysis and redevelopment of the financial components of the SAPCReN-CPCSSN operational and business plans
  • Responsible for evaluation components & financial forecasts, as required, for plans, reports, and updates
  • Represents the SAPCReN-CPCSSN on all matters related to University of Calgary compliance and reporting on fiscal, legal, and/or contractual agreements with external agencies and partners
  • Works closely with partners across the University of Calgary, University of Alberta, Alberta Health Services, and other external partners to ensure timely and up-to-date financial reporting
  • Serves as the liaison for reporting, communication, and compliance with external partners, funding agencies, and organizations in financial matters
  • Liaises with Research Services on all legal and contractual agreements involving the Institute
  • Operational Management:
  • Develop and negotiate research agreements and strategic alliances, including conducting recruitment and maintenance negotiations with sentinel physicians and their practice staff
  • In conjunction with the Office of Research Administration, review of all confidentiality statements, legal disclosures, and legal documents
  • Develop, create, update and manage the CPCSSN confidentiality, privacy and data security processes
  • Chair research group meetings
  • Staff Management:
  • Manage daily activities of research staff, providing daily direction on operations and research tasks
  • Responsible for working with the DFM Research Director to determine positions that would support the strategic goals of the Research group
  • Manages the creation job profiles, hiring, and onboarding of staff
  • Performs and engages staff in annual performance reviews
  • When required, performs disciplinary, including terminations, actions
  • Oversees the complete range of human resource management for operational staff
  • Research Leadership:
  • Contribute to scientific writing and publication of SAPCReN-CPCSSN research
  • Author scientific reports to provide updates to funders
  • Design, develop and lead research projects
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to faculty and trainees around research methods and project implementation
  • Provide technical guidance to research staff on research procedures and project management
  • Create datasets for the purposes of analyses, conducting the analyses and reporting the results
  • Provide support and guidance to research staff in data management and analysis
  • Liaise with the national CPCSSN executives
  • Attend national CPCSSN meetings and executive meetings
  • Oversee research ethics approval procedures
  • Attend national and international scientific meetings for the purposes of dissemination
  • Undertake recruitment and support of providers and their clinics in southern Alberta
  • Liaise with Cumming School of Medicine research institutes and administrative leadership on matters related to policies, procedures, and compliance and ensure their implementation and administration in the Institute
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • PhD in public health, epidemiology or health services research required
  • Completion of a postdoctoral fellowship or demonstration of independent research project leadership
  • Advanced knowledge of research administrative procedures is required
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of progressive work experience related to the primary purpose of the position. A combination of experience and skills will be considered
  • Substantial experience in statistics and EMR data science is required
  • Project management and staff or student supervisory experience in a public health or epidemiology context is required
  • Excellent communication through written and verbal means as necessary
  • Understanding of the University\'s financial reporting system an asset
  • Experience managing in an Unionized environment an asset
  • Strong analytical, communication and interpersonal skills are required
  • The incumbent must be able to handle several projects simultaneously, and work with individuals and groups from across various networks to budget and manage funds for projects related to SAPCReN. There are sometimes conflicting deadlines to manage, so flexibility and composure are required
  • Must work well under pressure and be able to communicate effectively with all levels of the institution and with external stakeholders
  • Maintains the highest level of discretion, integrity and trust in all dealings
  • Excellent professionalism, diplomacy and a high degree of confidentiality
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
