Job Description

FREDsense Technologies is hiring! We are a Calgary-based water instrumentation company specializing in creating portable units for doing water chemistry analysis in the field. FREDsense manufactures easy-to-use units that allow accurate and rapid detection of various contaminants. We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, full-time, in-person Research Scientist to join our team working on designing and optimizing environmental sensors.

The Role



This is a hands-on, in-the-lab role for someone who is passionate about experimental work and takes initiative to solve problems. The successful candidate will be detail oriented with strong experimental and analytical skills in the fields of analytical, environmental, and/or biological chemistry. They will be responsible for independently and collaboratively designing, executing, and analyzing experiments, and using their expertise to determine the next steps for a project's research direction. Once oriented to the work environment, the candidate should be able to assume the following responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities



Experimental Design & Execution:

Independently and collaboratively design, plan, and execute experiments with scientific rigor. Contribute to making key decisions on research methodologies and approaches.

Problem-Solving & Innovation:

Perform troubleshooting efforts for complex challenges. Use data and relevant scientific literature to inform research direction, researching industry-standard approaches and coming up with innovative ideas to solve high-priority research problems.

Data Analysis & Reporting:

Analyze and interpret experimental data for quarterly reporting periods and determine logical next steps for experimental work.

Project Ownership:

Take responsibility and ownership for the completion and reporting of progress on assigned team goals. Stay informed of the latest scientific literature, technological advancements, and industry trends to inform and contribute to research directions.

Lab Operations:

Implement and maintain high standards of laboratory practice, meticulous record-keeping, and data integrity.

Communication & Dissemination:

Clearly summarize completed work and present findings to management and the project team. Contribute to the preparation of scientific publications and patent applications as needed. Represent the company at scientific conferences through presentations and poster sessions.

Required Skills, Experience, and Qualities



Education:

An MSc or PhD in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline from an accredited institution.

Experience:

A minimum of 3 years of post-graduate research experience in a research and development or academic setting, demonstrating a track record of scientific accomplishment.

Ability to generate new ideas to overcome challenges, interpret data, and use expertise to solve problems in a systematic way.

Time Management:

The ability to complete experiments efficiently while managing multiple tasks and priorities.

The ability to present complex data to leadership and peers in a clear, easy-to-understand manner.
