Research Officer

Primary Purpose: To support the Department of Psychiatry Research Program by providing specialized methodology, data analysis and interpretation skills, and facilitation expertise to further the research mission and strategic direction of department. To act as a resource and internal consultant to clinical faculty, residents, research staff and students. To support increased capacity of the research program by providing input and resources to execute research-related initiatives, leading to expanded research enterprise within the department.

Nature of Work: The research officer will receive day-to-day guidance, will report to, and be accountable to the departmental Research Facilitator and overall to the Finance and Administrative Manager. The incumbent will also be provided with direction from the Clinical Research Director, the Provincial Department Head, and collaborating faculty. This position supports the research program within the department and the incumbent will be required to actively seek, coordinate, follow up with research projects, as necessary, to ensure proper support is provided and projects are on track. The research officer provides necessary support in study design and data analysis (qualitative, quantitative, survey, and mixed methods). Additional responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to, developing and delivering seminar series to residents and faculty on topics relating to research planning, delivery and organization; coordinating research related activities; and supporting research administration within the department. The position is of moderate complexity and is assisted by the research facilitator in determining appropriate action for complex issues and decisions. Works independently and collaboratively with a variety of integrated team environments to ensure harmonization of activities with other faculty. Attention to detail, diligence, focus on quality, relatedness, collaborative mindset, and drive are necessary to ensure success in the position.

Typical Duties/Accountabilities:

  • Research Development
  • Data preparation and application of statistical expertise (simple and multiple regression, factor analysis and other item clustering techniques, repeated measures analysis of variance, etc.)
  • Analysis and report preparation of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods data
  • Primary responsibility for methodological and statistical content of publications, funding applications and knowledge translation initiatives
  • Primary responsibility for extracting and analyzing variables in database-driven research
  • Assist in developing research presentations and posters for faculty and residents
  • Assist with data collection, as needed
  • Filling in knowledge gaps and taking advantage of research opportunities by seeking out data sets, literature, knowledge experts, etc. to support ongoing research and assisting with expanding research topics
  • Provide sound and timely advice relating to statistical methods, study design, and other aspects of departmental research program
  • Develop and administratively manage departmental database research enterprise, including ethics, quality assurance, guidelines, standard of practice/use, faculty support, etc. enabling the use of existing departmental databases for research purposes
  • Support database research by seeking out databases and data depositories & collaborate with provincial and national organizations, e.g. CIHI and HQC, to work on securing required data, data clean up, analysis, and reporting
  • Assume primary responsibility for extracting and analyzing variables in database-driven research
  • Research Coordination
  • With the direction from the research facilitator, identify and coordinate research opportunities and collaborations with other units and institutions
  • Coordinate and manage research projects (departmental and faculty driven) and administrative processes, including ethics, term/final reports, and others as directed by research facilitator
  • Coordinate departmental research-related activities and events, including, but not limited to research meetings, poster presentations, etc.
  • Coordinate poster/presentation submission for printing/presentation, as necessary
  • With the direction from the research facilitator, work on implementing strategic initiatives to foster collaborative research community in the department
  • Provide support in development of departmental research metrics
  • Communication, Organization, and Project and Time Management
  • Work collaboratively with other faculty, departments, and units across campus and in the community by establishing and maintaining excellent working relationships with colleagues
  • Provide necessary work outputs in a timely manner as requested and required
  • Actively seek out and follow up on ongoing research projects and research-related initiatives within the department, ensuring timely flow of the research cycle
  • Effectively establish work scope, timelines, work plans, and accountabilities for self and team members to ensure quality and clarity of scope for projects
  • Work with the faculty and department to improve the quality, quantity and success of research projects
  • Set priorities, deliver outcomes in a timely manner and set/manage feasible expectations with collaborators
Qualifications

Education: Hold a minimum of a Master\'s degree in Statistics, Community Health and Epidemiology, Psychology, or a related field from a recognized university with extensive focus on research design and data analysis methods. Preference given to PhD candidates. Completion of (or willingness to complete) TCPS 2 CORE ethics training and Chart Review Tutorial. Completed training in OCAP\xc2\xae principles, would be considered and asset.

Experience: A minimum of three years of experience working in a research environment in a university research setting; experience with interdisciplinary programs preferably in health or social sciences, grant development, scientific writing, project management, and a broad knowledge of clinical research landscape. Extensive experience with all stages of the research progress, including question development, design, data collection, analysis and knowledge dissemination, including ethics application preparation (behavioral and biomedical) and grant preparation. Ideal candidate should also possess a publication track record in which the incumbent is a primary author of at least one published manuscript, oral presentation and poster. Proven experience with managing large databases, both administratively and data analysis/extraction is required

Skills: Knowledge of, and proficiency with, relevant computer applications including SPSS, SAS, NVivo along with strong knowledge of statistics, attention to detail, and ability to share relevant knowledge with researchers re statistical methods/approaches, are required. Ability to maneuver large databases and conduct correct data analyses. Ability to apply knowledge of research methodology to clinical research questions and ability to generate questions and facilitate projects. Effective interpersonal, mentoring, coaching, project management and organizational skills; demonstrated ability to deliver proactive, user-oriented services; excellent communication (oral and written) skills; proven track record in effective project and time management skills; strong critical and analytical ability; collaborative mindset; ability to exercise sound judgement, tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality. Ability to effectively manage competing interests, priorities, and deadlines with minimal supervision and within a variety of integrated team environments
