The Research Manager is responsible for managing research activities within the Vancouver Acute site of the Division of Orthopaedic Trauma. The incumbent will oversee all activities related to the planning, initiation, coordination, management, and timely completion of the projects and studies. Other responsibilities include developing and translating study protocols and grant applications, providing technical consultation, managing knowledge dissemination, and systematic reviews of quantitative and qualitative data.Organizational StatusThe UBC Department of Orthopaedics has an international reputation for excellence in teaching, research and patient care. Our mission is to create knowledge, advance learning, and improve musculoskeletal health for the community at the provincial, national, and international levels. The Department consists of seven clinical divisions and a division of orthopaedic research, and is comprised of 200+ academic and clinical faculty who choose to contribute large blocks of their time to advance knowledge in the areas of clinical orthopaedics, musculoskeletal science as well as applied biomedical engineering and related basic science areas. This focus allows the Department to be at the forefront of exciting new developments in the areas of minimally invasive joint replacement, improved fracture healing, advanced techniques in spinal surgery, innovative arthroscopic techniques, and improved biomaterials and implants.The Vancouver Acute Orthopaedic Trauma Program has an emphasis on the assessment and management of multiply-injured patients, and major injuries resulting from blunt trauma. Vancouver Acute functions as a Level I trauma center. The program concentrates on the treatment of injuries to the pelvis and extremities and their early and late complications.The Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship program at Vancouver General Hospital was the first of its kind in Canada, and has been training Canadian and foreign fellows since 1984. We have a very strong reputation for clinical and academic excellence nationally and internationally. We have a significant presence in the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, AO North America and the Canadian Orthopaedic Association xe2x80x93 providing opportunities for networking and establishment in the sub-specialty for our trainees.The Research Manager reports to the Head of Research, Head of the Division of Orthopaedic Trauma at VGH and UBC, and other PIs within the group. The Research Manager will work closely and provide leadership with other research staff and will participate in activities within the Division of Orthopaedic Trauma. The Research Manager will provide leadership, vision, and drive growth in the Research Program.Work Performed

  • Manages all research activities within the Vancouver Acute site of the Division of Orthopaedic Trauma; including grant applications, study initiation, ethic applications, hospital administrative study procedures, collaboration with other sites for multi-site studies, and oversight of patient recruitment and follow-up.
  • Manages data collection; oversees and maintains data collection tools and databases for study tracking and data analyses; oversees data entry procedures and/or enters data into electronic data capture systems in accordance with specific study requirements. Supports data linkage procedures and analyses.
  • Develops, analyzes, and synthesizes data obtained from various studies with consultant statisticians.
  • Plans, develops, edits, and implements research proposals and protocols.
  • Oversees students, residents, fellows, and other research team members; in collaboration with PIs, responsible for hiring, onboarding, training, managing, supervising, and evaluating research team members (coordinators and assistants)
  • Maintains responsibility for flow of projects being carries out by learners, sets and oversees timelines and completion goals. Maintains responsibility for overall productivity of research program, reports regularly on progress, and identifies and proposes solutions for challenges.
  • Provides advice and guidance to internal and external stakeholders on matters related to Vancouver Acute research; Responsible for liaising with key stakeholders, responding to their information needs about the program, and preparing and disseminating key information.
  • Manages finances of various projects and is responsible for overseeing expenditures and grant accounts and is responsible for accuracy in procedures and activities. Reports routinely to PIs on financial status of the program and makes timely and supported requests for expenditures.
  • Manages progress of research program; modifies protocols iteratively during study progression and proposes further studies as new developments arise.
  • Works in collaboration with others in the development of and conducting joint studies.
  • Oversees study participant eligibility screening, recruitment, enrollment and follow-up; ensuring compliance with study protocols.
  • Ensures adherence to all safety standards, human ethics, and privacy protection guidelines.
  • Develops and translates study protocols, in order to complete submissions for ethics application and data access requests.
  • Assists grant submissions by revising applications, ensuring adherence to grant guidelines, organizing co-investigators, tracking deadlines, completing research project information forms, and obtaining signatures.
  • Prepares and/or reviews scientific manuscripts for publication in various scientific journals. Maintains communication with PIs for studies throughout process
  • Writes abstracts for conferences and produces and delivers poster and/or oral presentations to aid in the translation of knowledge and dissemination of study findings.
  • Coordinates meetings among community, staff, research team, and support staff. Manages quarterly strategic planning meetings, monthly meetings for program, as well as weekly team check-ins as tools to effectively lead and manage the success of the program. Creates and maintains clear and up to date records of meetings and program activity to allow PIs to stay updated when unable to attend.
  • Attend scientific meetings and present posters and papers, as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Research Manager is required to participate in and conduct all work-related activities in an ethical manner and to maintain strict confidentiality where required. Exercising poor judgment and lack of appropriate consultation with other team members can adversely affect the viability and validity of the project(s) to be implemented. The Research Manager is expected to work in a professional manner exercising poise and discretion especially when dealing with vulnerable patients and their families, and with sensitive medical information. Inappropriate disclosure of research participants personal information would contravene privacy legislation and could result in legal action. Errors in data, reference materials or publications if detected, would result in delays, requiring additional resources to obtain or validate data. Establishing effective working relationships within the team and with other program stakeholders is essential in the success of the research program. Inability to establish and foster effective working relationships may affect the integrity of the program and the successful and timely completion of research projects.Supervision Received
The incumbent will work under the supervision of Head of the Division of Orthopaedic Trauma and the Director of Research, Vancouver Acute Division of Orthopedic Trauma. The incumbent works independently on a day-to-day basis with minimal direction.Supervision Given
The Research Manager may oversee the day-to-day tasks of research staff, residents, fellows and students. The Research Manager will be responsible for delegating and supervising specific responsibilities.Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
