Job Description


The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is currently seeking a full-time, permanent Research Manager to support a range of interrelated research projects in the area of suicide prevention and virtual care. The research and evaluation team employs a range of methodologies, from qualitative to quantitative, and mixed-methods, including narrative and arts-based methods. We value patient-engaged research and research that advances equity and inclusion.

Talk Suicide Canada, which will be the cornerstone of this research and evaluation portfolio, is a national suicide prevention crisis line. In November 2023 we will launch 988, a national 3-digit number to access these emergency services. Research and evaluation dimensions of Talk Suicide Canada include establishing best-practices in intervention, improving equity of services, exploring the needs and preferences of diverse populations, and understanding the perspectives of people with lived and living experiences. We are also exploring relevant intersections with digital health and AI.

The Research Manager will have functional reporting to the Principal Investigator of the Talk Suicide Canada, Virtual Care, and Northern Outreach research lab, and will work in collaboration with the scientific leads and research staff to oversee and support the research portfolio. The Research Manager will work closely with the Acting Director of Talk Suicide, and the Talk Suicide Canada and Virtual Mental Health teams to ensure high quality and execution of the project in accordance with project deliverables. The successful candidate will have direct reporting to the Director, Clinical Research to ensure alignment to best practices in research administration and support.

Key Accountabilities

  • Project and study coordination and planning, supporting the research team in the operations and implementation of research studies.
  • Manage all aspects of human resources including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, and daily supervision of grant funded staff, including performance management.
  • Ensuring compliance of research personnel with CAMH institutional and research policies, procedures and regulations
  • Research ethics board submissions
  • Supporting internal and external grant submissions
  • Developing necessary Standard Operating Procedures for study conduct
  • Liaising with necessary stakeholders and study partners, internally and externally
  • Liaising with the entire investigator study team and coordinating regular meetings and infrastructure to ensure deliverables are met
  • With the study investigator team, outline and track study deliverables and targets, including but not limited to participant recruitment targets
  • Negotiating and establishing contractual agreements
  • Maintaining oversight of budgets and necessary progress internal and external reports
  • Preparing any necessary contracts/agreements
  • Supporting knowledge dissemination activities

Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a Master\xe2\x80\x99s Degree in a related field (e.g. psychology, neuroscience, Health Sciences, Health Administration, Social Work), at least 3 years of relevant clinical research experience is required, and 3 years of progressive research leadership experience. Previous research or service with individuals and/or families with mental health is considered an asset. In addition, the successful candidate will possess the following skills:
  • Previous management and project management experience
  • Strong understanding of regulatory guidelines & research governance of human participant research (ICH GCP, TCPS2, Health Canada regulations, FDA, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience and skill in hospital/grant accounting and reporting as well as proven analytical, organizational, conceptual, and decision making skills in a dynamic fast paced environment.
  • Experience managing staff is required and management in a unionized environment is an asset.
  • Experience with both qualitative and quantitative research methods
  • Experience with large scale clinical trials and/ or Certification as a Clinical Research Professional considered an asset
  • Experience and knowledge of electronic data capture systems (e.g. REDCap) is an asset
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Well-honed time management skills with the ability to efficiently multi-task and produce high-quality, accurate work while meeting deadlines, maintaining flexibility to changing priorities and remaining solution-focused. Demonstrated experience working on multiple projects is ideal.
  • Highly detail-oriented with demonstrated ability to exercise initiative and good judgment and effectively work independently while supporting a fast-paced, high-functioning work environment and monitoring personal and team-level deliverables.
  • Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language are an asset.
Vaccines (COVID-19 and others) are a requirement of the job unless you have an exemption on a medical ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.

Please Note: This full-time, permanent position is NOT part of any Bargaining Unit.
