Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Manager. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

The position is for a Research Manager to carry out projects in the area of anti-racism, Black peoples health, racialized peoples health and health equity.

This position will include the oversight of all ongoing research projects for both students and all research staff. The candidate will answer directly to the PI, will collaborate with the PI to determine the research projects and the research direction and will help to develop, design and implement all research projects.

As well, the manager will oversee all budgets, safety requirements and research personnel. The position of Research Manager is a fixed term appointment for 12 months.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Leadership:
  • Responsible for managerial discretion of direct reports
  • Responsible for the management of all staff of the research program
  • Manages the creation of job profiles, hiring, and onboarding of staff
  • Performs and engages staff in annual performance review
  • When required, performs disciplinary, including terminations, actions
  • Trains all research staff including on critical race theory, intersectionality, qualitative research methods, participatory research methods, Black peoples health and racialized peoples health
  • Oversees the complete range of human resource management for operational staff
  • Ensures all staff have a Hazard Assessments in place to reduce risk for their position
  • Coordinates priorities of the research project to meet deadlines
  • Required to liaise with senior researchers and leaders on issues that are outside of the scope of responsibility
  • Liaises with external stakeholder, especially Black and racialized communities
  • Define strategies, establish standard operating procedures and execute plans
  • Support teaching and research and conveying expertise and knowledge to all personnel
  • Instructs others in the use of project management tools
  • Judgment and Decision Making:
  • Makes decisions in ambiguous situations within established process, procedures and guidelines pertaining to their own research project team
  • Uses own scientific judgment to apply and adapt standard methods and techniques by applying prior work experience and consulting others appropriately
  • Uses judgment to identify and resolve day-to-day technical and operational issues in coordinating the research project
  • Responsible for developing and managing project budget
  • Responsible for the fiscal management of said funds
  • Communication and Scientific Contribution:
  • Responsible for writing and submitting research papers
  • Explains difficult issues and works to build alignment around a complex situation
  • Communicate data quality issues with site coordinators and outstanding discrepancies with reporting requirements to the sponsor and the Principle Investigator
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization
  • Responsible for writing, compiling and submitting operational grants for funding applications
  • Valuable communication with Principle Investigator
  • Design and undertake own research with a clear focus on knowledge translation, including publishing in peer-reviewed research articles
  • Publish and/or present technical papers to external audiences; participates in significant internal publications
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Masters degree required; PhD preferred
  • Minimum 3 years postdoctoral experience (i.e. post PhD research experience)
  • Direct and demonstrable research experience in areas of Black and racialized people\'s health
  • Direct and demonstrable experience in community engagement
  • Excellent understanding of concepts, theories and principles relevant to Black peoples health, critical race theory, intersectionality, racialized peoples health and qualitative research
  • Demonstrated strong research leadership qualities, including communication and organizational skills
  • Expertise in qualitative methodology
  • Expertise in quantitative methodology is an asset
  • Ability to solve complex problems
  • Superb writing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively and determine priorities as well as delegate tasks appropriately
  • Demonstrate fiscal responsibility with respect to cost of research, acquired technology, external collaborations and travel
  • Experience overseeing all research accounts as well as identifying and acquiring new funding sources to support the research program
  • Demonstrated ability to write and publish research papers
