Compensation Range $5,468.83 - $7,878.17 CAD Monthly
The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary
The Research Manager will lead and manage research activity and strategic research initiatives for the UBC Division of Cardiology, working in close collaboration with the Director of Research. Responsibilities will include divisional research support, grant facilitation, and developing frameworks for core divisional research activities. He/she/they will serve as the resource liaison to division members on issues related to research policies, procedures, contracts, and information acquisition. Strategic activities will include targeting funding agencies, developing collaborations with key local, national, and international partners, and developing strategic plans.

Organizational Status

The Research Manager will:

  • Report to the UBC Division of Cardiology Director of Research and the Division Head

  • Attend weekly meetings and other meetings as needed with the Director and division members

  • Interact closely with Principal Investigators (PIs), Department of Medicine staff, and other partners with regard to research activities

  • Interact with members of relevant UBC departments and facilities, including the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Office of Research Services, and UBC Finance

  • Interact with funding agencies, decision-makers, university personnel, and community agencies.


Work Performed

Research Support:
  • Implement internal processes for grant applications within the division including the Cardiology Academic Partnership Plan Pilot Project
  • Manage and oversee the Research Committee
  • Develop financial forecasts and budgets for PIs related to research grants and grant applications
  • Forecast funding and expenses for planning purposes related to the research budget
  • Develop and lead research orientation for new division members
  • Develop and write research reports as needed
  • Develop and maintain the content of the research content on the division\xe2\x80\x99s website and maintain faculty member research profile databases
  • Write correspondence on behalf of the Director of Research
  • Perform other related duties as required


Grant Facilitation:
  • Liaise with the Director of Research, granting agencies, research institutes, and centers on issues pertaining to policies and procedures on current research funding opportunities
  • Identify appropriate funding opportunities for PIs and advise them on application requirements and deadlines
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge and understanding of divisional researchers and research programs
  • Edit and prepare the submission of grant applications including completing forms for granting agencies and UBC
  • Draft the scientific aspects of grant applications as needed for PIs
  • Answer research-related inquiries from division members
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge relevant to grant applications to ensure that applications and budgets meet requirements from the:
    • Funding Agency
    • Department of Medicine
    • Faculty of Medicine
    • Other UBC offices such as ORS and Finance
  • Provide leadership as the resource liaison to all division members in supporting grant and ethics applications
  • Ensure faculty members meet deadlines for operating and salary grants
  • Ensure ethical standards of research are followed
  • Perform other related duties as required


Research development:
  • Survey Division members to assess research needs and priorities
  • Assist in developing the Division\xe2\x80\x99s strategic research plan with the Director of Research
  • Augment divisional research productivity and competitiveness
  • Develop pathways to access research services at the Centre for Cardiovascular Innovation (CCI; a UBC Faculty of Medicine Centre,

  • Create feedback mechanisms for Division research activities
  • Develop frameworks for core activities across the research spectrum, such as ethics, human resources, finance management, and knowledge translation
  • Develop standard operating procedures for privacy and data governance in conjunction with key stakeholders
  • Develop partnerships and data sources to support Division research activities, including cohort studies, registries, administrative data, and pragmatic trials
  • Work with Cardiac Services BC to develop a collaborative integrated research partnership
  • Work with the UBC University-Industry Liaison Office to facilitate research and innovation with industry, entrepreneurs, government, and non-profit organizations
  • Work with the St. Paul\xe2\x80\x99s Hospital Foundation and Vancouver General Hospital Foundation to support Division members
  • Develop relationships and improve access to specific funding bodies such as MITACS, Digital Supercluster, Genome BC, federal and international institutions
  • Develop partnerships to support data science integration with Division research activities
  • Create hubs affiliated with partnered UBC Centres and Clusters, such as Biomedical Imaging and Artificial Intelligence, Data Science Institute, Centre for Health Services and Policy Research, Life Sciences Institute


Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Research Manager is responsible for the leadership and management of all operational activities related to divisional ethics, research grants, and grant facilitation. Poor decisions could delay the timely completion of the applications or be damaging to the reputation, and cause financial loss to the Pl, the Division, the Department, the Faculty, UBC, and other institutions affiliated with the project(s).

Supervision Received
For the most part, the Research Manager will work independently and will receive direction, as necessary, from the Director of Research and the UBC Division Head. The Research Manager will also interact closely with PIs, divisional Research Managers, and the Department of Medicine\xe2\x80\x99s Research Manager.

Supervision Given
The Research Manager provides guidance to support staff, research staff, and work-study students as needed to ensure that the research grant and ethics applications are prepared and executed in a timely and efficient manner. The Research Manager may also supervise students as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Masters degree or higher is preferred. Experience in conducting and supporting research. Experience in technical writing. Experience in human resource management is preferred. Experience with UBC financial systems preferred. Experience in office administration in a research area at UBC is preferred. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Detailed knowledge of UBC grant and ethics application preparation. Knowledge of research institutes and how they relate to each other and to UBC.
Knowledge of conflict of interest and conflict of commitment is an asset. Financial skills with the ability to effectively use Excel at an advanced level. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to exercise sound judgment. Ability to exercise initiative, diplomacy, tact, and discretion. Proficient and comfortable using a range of software for desktop publishing, website design, database/accounts administration, and in a variety of operating systems. Ability to analyze problems identifies key information and issues, and effectively resolve them. Ability to identify, obtains, and effectively manage organizational resources. Excellent written and verbal English. Ability to communicate effectively verbally. Ability to work with others in a team environment. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to travel to different work sites as needed. Ability to work a flexible schedule including early morning and evening meetings/events as required.
