The Role

The Institute for Better Health is seeking a Research Lead that will support the Family and Child Health Initiative (FCHI) (https://familyandchildhealth.ca)- a community-based participatory research program focused on improving the health and wellness of children and families in the Peel region, Ontario and beyond. The Research Lead will facilitate the development and implementation of health-oriented community-based projects in partnership with numerous cross sector partners as well as manage the operational requirements. In additional to supporting scientific activities, the Research Lead will manage the operational elements of the FCHI portfolio, including coordinating study logistics and managing timelines; budget creation, tracking, and resource planning; supporting research staff in conducting the daily study activities; and organizing the ethics and regulatory requirements of various research studies. This is a unique opportunity to be exposed to the hospital setting, support innovative health research and to play a pivotal role in enabling and mobilizing health research within hospital and community settings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee research and project staff to ensure milestones and key deliverables are met
  • Provide scientific and methodological guidance across FCHI projects
  • Operational management of FCHI scientific projects including agreements, budgets, resourcing, and timelines
  • Lead and mentor research and project staff on the identification of key research questions and methodology development in accordance to protocol and data analysis
  • Lead and train research staff in the creation of study materials (e.g., REB application, consent forms, data collection forms)
  • Train and onboard FCHI team members (research and project staff, students, etc) to the FCHI Team
  • Provide regular updates of research progress and prepare reports as determined in partnership with FCHI co-leads
  • Lead and support knowledge translation activities including but not limited to peer reviewed publications, conference proceedings, and stakeholder engagement
  • Contribute to grant development
Core Qualifications
  • PhD in a field relevant to health (e.g., public health, health research methodology, health services research, social sciences). Candidates with a Master's degree in a related field with demonstrated exceptional experience will also be considered
  • 3+ years of experience working in a health or social services related field, demonstrating knowledge of qualitative and quantitative methods (Note that graduate experience qualifies)
  • Experience working with diverse communities
  • A broad understanding of mixed-methods, patient reported outcomes, and scientific evaluation
  • Strong collaboration and relationship management skills to work with and align a diverse, inter-professional team
  • Demonstrated initiative, independence, and organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and writing skills
The following are considered an asset to the role and should be highlighted in the cover letter:
  • Experience with community-based participatory research methods
  • Experience with intervention implementation and program evaluation
  • Experience or existing relationships with community organizations in the Peel Region
