There are xc2xb130 staff from varied disciplines (virologists, chemists, immunologists, computational scientists and GMP manufacturers, etc.) working in the Li Ka Shing Applied Virology Group with more than 12 active projects under development for future clinical testing. In addition, the group actively collaborates with about 12 Principal Investigators from the department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology as well as other University of Alberta departments. It also has active collaborations with several Principal Investigators at other Canadian & international organizations.PositionThe position's primary responsibilities will be to provide technical assistance to research projects focused on understanding hepatitis C virus biology and the immunology of infectious diseases. In addition, this individual will be involved in the daily operation of the research laboratory located in the Katz Group Centre as well as contributing greatly to the quality control requirements with the Li Ka Shing Centre.Duties

  • Handle human samples containing pathogens, such as HCV, while adhering to strict biosafety protocols to prevent contamination and ensure safety.
  • Work with animal blood and tissues in various experimental setups.
  • Perform molecular cloning tasks, including the production of DNA constructs and the purification of plasmid vectors.
  • Maintain, store, and properly handle mammalian cell lines for experimental purposes.
  • Routinely produce mammalian cell mass for the expression of recombinant proteins.
  • Conduct transient and stable transfections for the expression of recombinant proteins.
  • Assist in the purification of recombinant proteins from cultured cells.
  • Carry out SDS-PAGE analysis, Western blotting, ELISA assays, qPCR, and flow cytometry.
  • Prepare standard laboratory buffers for various experiments.
  • Perform cell-based assays as required. Maintain a detailed lab notebook and summarize experimental data in presentation formats.
  • Assist in ordering lab supplies and managing the chemical and biological inventory.
Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in molecular biology or immunology is preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of laboratory experience.
  • Preference for candidates with expertise in mammalian cell culture, as well as protein and DNA analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with flow cytometry is an asset.
  • Strong ability to keep accurate and thorough records of experiments.
  • Ability to follow established policies, procedures, and instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.
  • Strong organizational skills, oral and written communication skills.
