As Canada's largest mental health care provider, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) provides evidence to drive system and policy change through the implementation of innovations and novel service delivery interventions. The Brain Health Imaging Centre (BHIC) is one of the primary research areas of CAMH and focuses on new brain imaging tools and methods used in mental health and addictions for clinical neuroscience research.


Position Description:




The MRI Unit at BHIC is seeking a full-time, permanent Research Laboratory Manager reporting to the BHIC Research Operations Manager. This role will work closely with BHIC core imaging staff, including PET, engineering, and methodology, as well as clinical research imaging teams, scientists, other research staff, and trainees. The role will include oversight and support of MRI operations and quality assurance for MRI equipment and related spaces. The Laboratory Manager will oversee all MRI scanning operations and coordinate key initiatives related to the operations of the MRI Unit and provide support for day-to-day tasks. There may be some variability in the work schedule to ensure oversight of MRI Unit operations. The successful candidate will support a workplace which embraces diversity, encourages teamwork, and complies with all applicable regulatory requirements. In this role you will:

Provide oversight of MRI Unit operations and MRI equipment and will be responsible for ensuring patient and personnel safety. Develop, implement, and manage new MRI protocols, processes and documentation. Review and revise existing MRI processes for continual improvement. Provide training and support integration of new MRI imaging research trainees, staff, and scientists. This includes, but is not limited to, providing training on MRI safety, protocols, pipelines, methodology, and processes. Monitor and provide in-depth reviews of procedures and documentation for compliance, completeness, and correctness. Ensure all MRI imaging activities are in compliance with applicable federal and provincial regulations, as well as institutional requirements, including audits and inspections. Support the day-to-day operations for the MRI equipment and related spaces, including maintenance, quality control and assurance, as well as service for the MRI scanner and ancillary equipment. Manage MRI technologists, including safety oversight, and identify training and professional development needs. Ensure compliance of MRI technologists with institutional and regulatory requirements. Independently plan and manage small projects, including development and support of MRI processes. Identify MRI issues, and manage trouble-shooting of such issues including, but not limited to, safety, equipment, quality control and assurance, research imaging pipelines, methodologies, scan quality, data collection and integrity, data processing, and data archiving. Manage the implementation and adoption of applied MRI methodology and instrumentation. Support Imaging Methodology teams in new MRI initiatives, and manage development and implementation. Provide operational and administrative support to the BHIC Research Operations Manager and BHIC Director and related teams.

This position is located onsite at 250 College Street.


Job Requirements




Graduate from an accredited Magnetic Resonance program. Bachelor's Degree in applicable science or health sciences academic discipline. Current registration as a Medical Radiation Technologist (Magnetic Resonance Specialty) with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO). Previous training in laboratory management, research methodologies, and data analysis is essential. 2+ years of experience in research MRI imaging / lab experience, with progressive responsibilities. 3+ years with demonstrated increasing leadership responsibilities in an MRI setting, with leadership and mentorship skills. Ability to communicate and problem-solve with a diverse variety of stakeholders and team members who may have conflicting interests and priorities. Previous experience in managing a research lab, overseeing research projects, and supervising research staff is highly valuable. Familiarity with mental health research and knowledge of relevant regulations and compliance standards is beneficial. Strong organizational and leadership skills to effectively manage personnel and resources. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate collaboration and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and using good judgement with multi-disciplinary teams. Proficiency in data management and analysis tools, as well as a strong understanding of research ethics and regulatory compliance. Experience with research project management. Good understanding of the Canadian and U.S. grant funding landscape. Strong analytical, organizational, conceptual and decision-making skills. Superior written and verbal communication skills.

MRI Specific:



Thorough knowledge of MRI equipment, operation, safety and technical procedures, and applications is required. Experience and background in research neuroimaging, including fMRI, DTI, and spectroscopy is required. Experience with experimental / research pulse sequences is strongly preferred. Demonstrated ability to identify and articulate risk issues. Ability to prioritize and handle a high volume of diverse projects simultaneously to meet research imaging needs, and maintain poise and professionalism while dealing with complex protocols.
