Job Description


Terrestrial Energy is developing for near-term commercial operation, a zero-emissions cogeneration plant for global industry using its proprietary Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) fission technology in an innovative, small and modular plant design. The IMSR is a non-Light Water Reactor of the Generation IV class that operates at the high temperature required for broad industrial relevance with transformative economic potential. The IMSR plant is capable of grid-based electric power generation and industrial cogeneration in many energy-intensive industries, including petrochemical and chemical synthesis for hydrogen and ammonia production. The IMSR plant offers a near 50 percent improvement in efficiency of electric power generation compared to Light Water Reactor nuclear plants. Its industrial cogeneration capability delivers to today\xe2\x80\x99s markets industrial competitiveness, security of energy, and zero-emissions industrial production. The IMSR plant\xe2\x80\x99s use of existing industrial materials, components, and fuels supports its near-term deployment, setting the stage for a rapid global decarbonization of the primary energy system. The R&D Materials Intern, under the direction of the R&D Materials Manager, is primarily responsible for materials selection related activities, including development and execution of test programs in support of Terrestrial Energy (TEI) Engineering as part of TEI\xe2\x80\x99s overall R&D Program. Within this role, responsibilities include:
  • Execution of the materials selection and qualification activities at the direction of the R&D Materials Manager;
  • Conduct literature reviews;
  • Authorship of materials selection documents; incorporating any findings from literature reviews;
  • Support Technical Leads to successfully achieve the goals of the R&D Materials team
  • Collaborate with the R&D Project Coordinator to maintain and update schedules including status of all projects;
  • Review of the internal and external documents as related to test identification, test design development and testing activities;
  • Where possible, participate in testing activities

Requirements
  • Actively working towards a post-secondary degree in Materials Science or Materials Engineering, or an alternate degree in a related field (Chemical, Mechanical, or Nuclear Engineering). Or a new Materials Science or Materials Engineering grad or a new degree grad in a related field (Chemical, Mechanical, or Nuclear Engineering). Senior students or new grads preferred.
  • Work experience in a research laboratory, and sound understanding of the scientific method
  • Working knowledge of materials characterization techniques across all material classes.
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask & manage numerous short- and long-term projects concurrently; and
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication (both written and verbal) skills
Assets
  • Experience in experimental design and statistical analysis techniques
  • Knowledge of the nuclear design codes & standards (ASME, CSA)
  • Knowledge of the nuclear industry and irradiation of materials
