JOB SUMMARY

Over the past two years, a group of faculty, researchers, students, and staff in UBC, led by Prof. Peter Berman (the PI), developed research and methods to study the impact of institutional, organizational, governance, and political factors on decision-making and action shaping country responses to COVID-19. This research program includes multiple linked global and local projects and is expected to grow in the future.

The Research Coordinator (RC) will provide overall coordination support to the team in all aspects of these projects including methods and study development and write-up and publication of results. In addition, the RC will work with the PI and team members to develop new research proposals and budgets in collaboration with other UBC, national, and international researchers.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

This position reports to Dr. Berman as a core member of the growing \xe2\x80\x9cBerman Lab\xe2\x80\x9d. The successful candidate will work closely with a number of senior academics in several faculties at UBC. The incumbent will also liaise closely with staff at School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) and with national and international collaborators.

Housed within the Faculty of Medicine, the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) is an innovative unit that encompasses many of the health-related groupings at UBC as a collaborative venture. The School is structured around four divisions: Occupational and Environmental Health; Health Services and Policy; Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health Practice; and Health in Populations. The resulting mix of professions and disciplines is seen as a means of connecting individuals and learners to galvanize the relationship between health research, public health and health services and to enhance learning.

WORK PERFORMED

The RC will contribute to several currently operating COVID-19 research projects. These include a BC-focused in-depth mixed methods case study, and multiple international case studies being completed for publication (Ethiopia, Bangladesh, India, Peru, Georgia, Ghana). The RC will play a key role in coordinating, editing, and compiling chapters for a multi-volume publication edited by Prof. Berman. The RC will also contribute original research to this publication and contribute to the further development and elaboration of the IPOG approach underpinning Prof. Berman\xe2\x80\x99s research. As a key central member of the research team and the RC will manage meetings, perform research activities such as literature reviews, document reviews, drafting research protocols, ethics and grant applications, reporting, publishing articles, and performing knowledge dissemination. Further to coordinating meetings and other research initiatives between the three national and international working groups (pan-Canadian working group, and UBC central teams), the RC will play a key role in developing new research projects.

Under the direction of Prof. Berman, the Research Coordinator performs the following duties:

Lead research and development of write-ups of key contextual and background factors to IPOG analysis for BC, Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia as a member of the research team for the CIHR-supported four-province research project on IPOG factors in COVID-19 responses in Canada;

Contribute chapters from own research to multi-volume World Scientific Publications reference series on IPOG in Pandemic response being edited by Prof. Berman;

Manage editorial processes and communications and coordinate contributions with other authors contributing to the World Scientific Publications reference series on IPOG in Pandemic response;

Write short policy briefs and summary notes on results of IPOG-related research on pandemic responses;

Assist in researching and compiling source materials related to IPOG in population health policy;

Manage development of new proposals for global research funding support for IPOG related projects;

Additional research and writing contributions as need arises from multiple Canada-based and global research projects. Performs other duties as needed.

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR

This position exercises professional judgment and initiative in determining work methods for assignments. The incumbent is accountable for the efficient completion of tasks. Errors made could delay the timely completion of work, and thus compromise the results of the project. This would impact the credibility of the PI and other research team investigators. The ability to exercise good judgement while navigating both the academic milieu and concurrently engaging with international and external partners, and other research team members is a requirement.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The Research Coordinator works independently, receiving primary direction from Professor Berman and collaborates with other members of the projects.

SUPERVISION GIVEN

The Research Coordinator may supervise students, research assistants and project volunteers as required.
