Working for the Department of Medicine
The Department of Medicine is the largest department in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta with over 250 academic faculty members and over 400 trainees (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and residents).
The Department of Medicine's core mission is to undertake outstanding education, research and high-quality clinical care to provide the best possible health outcomes for Albertans. Position Summary
Working within the general direction and guidance from Dr. David Collister, the candidate will operate multiple clinical research projects conducted by the primary investigator.
The ideal candidate conducts study activities specific to investigator-initiated and industry research protocols, designs case report forms and databases, navigates ethics submissions, and completes Health Canada and other regulatory applications.
The employee will recruit study participants and complete follow-up, including the administration of questionnaires, which requires them to interact with patients, the University, and Alberta Health Services staff. The employee has demonstrated her ability to work independently, making critical decisions as to the accuracy, completeness and relevancy of all data collected.
Duties
Administrative Activities

  • Provides administrative support for grant applications, presentations, publications, reports and other program-based initiatives; Constructs and submits conference materials (i.e. abstracts, posters)
Research Activities
  • Follows and adheres to multiple research protocols and ethical standards.
  • Screens, recruits, and consents participants according to inclusion/exclusion criteria.
  • Collects and manages data, including handling bodily fluids and using hospital systems (e.g., ConnectCare, Netcare).
  • Provides instructions to participants and monitors safety and compliance.
  • Conducts follow-ups, completes case report forms (CRFs), and performs chart reviews.
  • Assists in data extraction for systematic reviews and contributes to manuscript preparation.
Project Management Activities
  • Independently manages study timelines, regulatory documents, and daily operations.
  • Prepares ethics submissions, SOPs, and study protocols.
  • Oversees data entry, cleaning, and reporting of adverse events.
  • Supervises and supports team members, including students and volunteers.
  • Coordinates regulatory compliance (e.g., ethics, Health Canada), project communication, and resource management.
  • Identifies funding opportunities and supports knowledge dissemination efforts.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in a related field.
  • At least 3 years of research experience with patient interaction and administration of questionnaires, dealing with patients, responding to study-related questions.
  • Experience or specific education in data management and data cleaning.
  • Familiar with retrieving patient information from patient charts.
  • Intermediate level competency with MS Office (Word and Excel) and Adobe.
  • Experience with RedCap database design and utilization.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks, timelines and a flexible work schedule.
  • Ability to work efficiently and in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with others on a team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A master of Science degree is an asset.
  • Fluency in a language other than English.
