Working for the Department of Medicine
The Department of Medicine is the largest department in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta with over 250 academic faculty members and over 400 trainees (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and residents). The Department of Medicine's core mission is to undertake outstanding education, research and high-quality clinical care to provide the best possible health outcomes for Albertans. Position Summary
This position is part of Dr. Sanjay Kalra's research team and will work independently with minimal supervision on a variety of studies. The candidate will assist in the general research operations of the ALS Lab. The candidate will have strong interpersonal and organizational skills to assist with a wide range of clinical research activities. A key role will be the coordination of the CAPTURE ALS research study.
Duties

• Prioritize tasks to be completed across multiple research projects

• Monitors progress of studies at other sites and oversees general operations of a multicentre observational clinical study
• Liaise with research assistants and technologists at sites and Research Services Offices in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry to provide information as needed for drafting of Sub-Site contracts
• Provide training in neuropsychological assessments to research assistants
• Assist research assistants at other sites with drafting and submission of local IRB applications

• Assist research assistants at other sites with drafting and submission of local MRI centre protocol applications
• Prepare a monthly written summary of progress and plans for each project for dissemination within the research team

• Produces newsletter at regular intervals to inform sites of study progress
• Assists with the recruitment of study subjects, including the completion of screening, consent, case report forms, and safety reports
• Administers study questionnaires and compiles responses; participates in other data-gathering processes as required
• Coordinates subject research visits
• Organizes hardcopy and computer files related to ongoing studies
• Records, accesses and transfers data from medical records to local database
• Drafts ethics applications and provides ongoing written and oral communication with the Health Research Ethics Board pertaining to adverse events and safety reports, protocol amendments
• Supervises student researchers and lab members on daily activities
• Prepares data and materials to assist PI with grant submissions, assists with manuscript preparation and submission
• Assists in training student researchers and interacts with other laboratory and research assistants on common and related projects
• Coordinate research team meetings
• Coordinate national and international teleconferences
• Responds to inquiries pertaining to research received from the public and other healthcare providers
• Assists with reconciliation of research accounts
• Performs other administrative duties as assigned
• Runs image analysis software and performs basic quality control of image results
• Evaluates and troubleshoots image quality issues

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's of Science degree; degree in neuroscience, psychology, computing science, biomedical engineering, or other health discipline preferred

Preferred Qualifications

• A minimum of 2 years of experience working with subjects in a clinical research setting is preferred
• Computer proficiency using MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) required
• Additional experience in computer vision, image processing, or with MATLAB and image-analysis software such as SPM, FSL, or Freesurfer would be a significant asset
