Job Summary
The Carwana Lab at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is seeking a highly organized and motivated Research Coordinator to manage and support community-based participatory research (CBPR) projects focused improving the lives of children and families experiencing structural marginalization. The Research Coordinator will play a crucial role in coordinating all aspects of the research project and managing the day-to-day operations of the lab, with a specific focus on community engagement and collaboration to co-create research that directly benefits children and families living in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. This position is integral to advancing the lab's mission of improving the well-being of vulnerable populations through inclusive, community-driven research practices.
Organizational Status
The Research Coordinator will report directly to the Principal Investigator (PI) and the Research Manager and work closely with other research staff, students, and external collaborators. This position may involve supervision of research assistants and coordination with other departments and external partners.
Work Performed
Project Management:
Coordinate all aspects of research projects, including planning, implementing, and monitoring study activities to ensure adherence to timelines and budgets.
Develop and maintain project documentation, including research protocols, timelines, and progress reports.
Write grant applications, including background, methods, and budget, for new projects that are an extension of the current project.
Participant Recruitment and Data Collection:
Oversee participant recruitment strategies, including outreach, consent processes, and scheduling.
Coordinate data collection activities, including surveys, interviews, focus groups, and other relevant methods.
Conduct interviews with participants.
Ensure the ethical management of data, including storage, security, and confidentiality according to UBC guidelines.
Data Management and Analysis:
Create databases, oversee data entry, and clean data, ensuring accurate and timely entry of research data.
Perform quantitative and qualitative data analysis, using statistical software (e.g., SPSS or R) for quantitative projects and NVivo for qualitative analysis.
Draft data summaries, reports, and visualizations for internal and external dissemination.
Communication and Collaboration:
Facilitate communication between research team members, collaborators, and stakeholders.
Lead regular project meetings, set agendas, and ensure follow-thorough on action items.
Draft and edit research manuscripts, presentations, and other knowledge translation materials.
Supervision and Training:
Supervise and mentor research assistants and students, providing guidance and support in their roles.
Coordinate training sessions and ensure all team members are compliant with UBC research policies and procedures.
Budget and Resource Management:
Assist the PI in the development and management of project budgets, including allocation of resources, and advising on budgetary decisions.
Other Duties:
Perform other related duties as required to support the research objectives of the Carwana Lab and the Social Pediatrics Program at BC Children's Hospital
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors in judgment or execution of duties could compromise the integrity of the research, lead to loss of data, negatively impact study participants, or result in financial loss. The Research Coordinator must exercise a high level of professional judgment, confidentiality, and ethical standards.
Supervision Received
The Research Coordinator works under the general direction of the Principal Investigator and Research Manager, and is expected to work independently with minimal supervision. Regular updates on project progress are required, and the Coordinator must seek guidance on complex or sensitive issues.
Supervision Given
This position may involve supervision of research assistants, students, and other lab staff. The Research Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that supervised individuals comply with research protocols and UBC policies.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Public Health, Psychology, Social Work). Minimum of 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience:
Experience in research coordination or project management, preferably in a healthcare or academic setting.
Experience working with children, youth, or vulnerable populations is an asset.
Demonstrated experience in trauma-informed care and/or overdose prevention research is highly desirable.
Skills:
Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
Proficiency in data management and analysis software (e.g., SPSS, R, NVivo).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong attention to detail.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Knowledge of UBC research policies, ethics, and guidelines is an asset.
