Position Overview

The Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Coordinator, Biomedical Engineering. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Administrative Manager and working closely with the Department Head, Biomedical Engineering and the Schulich School of Engineering Director, Solutions for Health, the Research Coordinator will play a critical role in Biomedical Engineering Research. The Research Coordinator will also support collaborations between researchers within the team but also across the University of Calgary and beyond, working with a wide range of stakeholders with multiple research projects.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide organization and coordination of activities and initiatives in order to ensure successful delivery of cross-campus Biomedical Engineering (BME) research and associated activities and initiatives. This includes overseeing several BME projects and various partnerships, working with Research Services and working with the International Office and Innovate Calgary to develop and execute strategies for partnership development. The Coordinator will facilitate cross-campus collaboration on BME projects, coordinate various workshops and events, prepare annual reports and maintain excellent relationships with internal and external stakeholders. There are also significant responsibilities associated with the implementation of project activities and the reporting of these activities and outcomes to granting agencies and sponsors.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Identifies new collaboration possibilities across campus and actively fosters productive work relationships, including identifying key stakeholders and bringing them together.
  • Develops and implements action plans for the creation and delivery of activities and initiatives as part of Biomedical Engineering. Takes responsibility for the successful completion of projects including tracking outcomes.
  • Provides leadership and project management for large grant applications ensuring alignment with program objectives, timelines and budgets.
  • Plans and coordinates meetings, workshops, industry days, conferences, and other activities involving academic, industry, and government partners. This includes coordinating room bookings, catering, managing registration, developing event content, and attending the events.
  • Liaises with researchers and partners, responding to communication enquiries as needed.
  • Assists with data collection, management and analysis of BME research activity.
  • Works closely with the BME Department Head on communication to stakeholders and developing reports and presentations.
  • Prepares and presents status reports; provides timely and accurate information and updates.
  • Provides senior level administrative support to the Biomedical Engineering research leadership.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • A post-secondary education (MSc or PhD) in science, kinesiology, medicine or engineering is required.
  • Excellent knowledge of the biomedical engineering sector.
  • Three or more years of progressive experience in a senior administrative role.
  • Extensive experience in the implementation of biomedical engineering or health-related projects and initiatives.
  • Highly effective organizational skills and a strategic planning skillset are required.
  • Ability to effectively negotiate solutions to complex problems and balance competing interests.
  • Knowledge of and experience with project management.
  • Knowledge of and general understanding of research-related activities such as manuscript reviews, grant writing, planning of scientific meetings.
  • Proficiency with computers and a variety of software including Microsoft Office, web-based marketing, social media, videoconferencing.
  • Knowledge of the University core business systems (PeopleSoft, eFin, Enterprise Reporting, etc.) is an asset.
