: $93,043 - $124,618 per annum

DUTIES



Reporting to the Director of BETAC, the Applied Research Chair in Sustainable Construction leads industry-driven research on sustainable housing, building efficiency, construction productivity, and innovation. The Chair works with clients and partners, negotiates agreements, and ensures high-quality deliverables. Key duties include identifying grant opportunities, building industry partnerships, and writing proposals to secure funding. The role also requires generating fee-for-service income through consultancy and testing services. Strong connections with industry, government, and community partners are essential to translate research into practical tools and guidelines that benefit BETAC and its collaborators.

Beyond student and instructor engagement, the Chair oversees co-op students and collaborates with RRC Polytech instructors on applied research programs. With support from the BETAC Director, the Chair develops and delivers training courses and workshops to help industry meet evolving codes, standards, and efficiency goals. The Chair supports BETAC's mandate and contributes to performance metrics and funder commitments. Success is measured by grant funding, industry-sponsored projects, training enrollments, and regular reporting on revenue, partnerships, and real-world impact.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS


A PhD in a relevant field such as Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, or a closely related discipline. Areas of specialization may include high-performance buildings, sustainable construction, energy efficiency, HVAC systems, indoor environmental quality, construction innovation, or climate-resilient design and retrofitting. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered Several years of industry-gained experience in home/building construction, building codes, and promoting innovation in construction technologies Experience in research program management with proven success in securing research funding (e.g., NSERC, SSHRC, Natural Resources Canada) Proven ability to build and maintain partnerships with industry organizations, government agencies, and community stakeholders Demonstrated capability to design and deliver training courses, workshops, or professional development programs that address evolving building codes, standards, and efficiency requirements Experience integrating applied research into academic programming, including mentoring co-op students and collaborating with instructors Strong project management skills including creating and managing project budgets and projections, with experience negotiating agreements, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, and delivering high-quality results on schedule Excellent written and verbal communication skills, evidenced by publications, technical reports, and presentations to both academic and industry audiences Effective human resource and financial management skills Strong leadership skills and experience managing research/technical teams Experience building a respectful workplace culture that promotes diversity, learning and continuous improvement
