Position Overview The Department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for a Research Associate, Water Resources (Hydrology). This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension. This position reports to the Primary Investigator. The position is comprised of technical, research, and project management functions related to advanced research topics in integrated climate-hydrologic- system modelling, including hydrologic and hydraulic modelling, model development, development of modelling workflows, and floodplain mapping. General instructions will be provided and the employee will need to make decisions about how the work will be completed within set timelines. The nominal University of Calgary work week is 35 hours. Working conditions include lab, occasional field work, and will sometimes involve irregular hours such as weekend and evening work. Fieldwork will sometimes involve exposure to inclement weather and the potential for wildlife encounters. The position is based at the University of Calgary but will involve travel within Canada, and occasionally to international conferences. Position Description Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

• Work will be within an integrated climate-hydrologic modeling framework, which will require integrating model inputs/outputs from multiple models, following and creating standardized modelling workflows, and producing coupled model outputs
• Adhere to modelling methods, relevant standard procedures, and coding protocols and apply the FAIR standards
• Maintain technical codes on open-source repositories and continuously update and revision control
• Maintain regular reporting protocols and detailed record keeping
• Analyse and interpret model output to perform specialized statistical analyses and climate change assessments
• Work in an inter-disciplinary team, mentoring peers, and receiving minimal guidance from multiple supervisors
• Provide advice to supervisors on complex, project-based decisions and directions, initiating and actively participating in team brain storming activities
• Work independently day-to-day, with limited supervision and guidance from multiple project holders/collaborators who identify major deliverables and directions
• Prepare and lead scientific articles for submission to peer-reviewed journals
• Engage and communicate with industry partners and research collaborators
• Support supervision and leadership of undergraduate and graduate students
• Provide clear direction to students in fast changing environment when there is only complex and partial information available
  

Qualifications / Requirements:

• Advanced degree (MSc, MEng, - PhD preferred) in Civil Engineering (Water Resources)
• Specialization in computational hydrology and hydraulics and floodplain mapping required
• A track record of peer-reviewed publications in the field of hydrologic and hydraulic modelling
• 4-6 years experience with integrating multiple types of models and data, including climate (CMIP5 and CMIP6), hydrological (specifically HYPE and MESH), and floodplain mapping tools
• Advanced analytical and scripting software experience ( R, python, Github, Fortran, Linux, Jypter notebooks) are required, including GIS applications and software
• Knowledge of large pan-Canadian watersheds and hydrology
• Experience with server-based computing environments and high performance computing, including large data management
• Experience with Github and model agnostic workkflows, and demonstrated application of following the FAIR scientific principles
• Strong problem solving skills and trouble shooting skills
• Strong communication skills (oral + written)
• Demonstrated leadership capabilities
• Excellent project and time management skills
• Strong interpersonal skills demonstrated by outreach activities (related to water resources)
• Familiar with University culture and environments within research-intensive Canadian institutions, including reporting protocols for major granting agencies (i.e., NSERC)
