Job Description

The Faculty of Agriculture, Dalhousie University is a small research-intensive campus located in Truro, NS. Offering technical, undergraduate and graduate programs in agriculture, environment and related life and social science disciplines, the Faculty of Agriculture educates future leaders and generates knowledge and innovative solutions for healthy, sustainable societies. Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Associate will conduct research and development projects in Animal Genomics and Machine Learning, and their integration to breeding programs.
Key Responsibilities

• Develop and use machine learning methods for genetic/genomic evaluation, analyzing genomic data, modeling, whole genome association analyses, gene discovery and validation.
• Manage and analyze large-scale, complex datasets.
• Participate in writing and preparing research grants and manuscripts.
• Assist in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, including assisting with research design. Work with a variety of industry and academic partners.
• Manage the lab environment, including supplies, inventories, logistics, shipment, etc. as well as organizing lab meetings.

Note

The incumbent occasionally will be required to travel to and work in field environments throughout the Maritimes.

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.
Required Qualifications

• PhD in Animal Genomics, Machine Learning, Quantitative Genetics, Statistical Genomics or equivalent plus approximately two to three years experience as a Postdoctoral Fellow in a relevant field.
• Previous experience supervising undergraduate and graduate students.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational and problem-solving skills.

Assets

• Experience in and/or familiarity with molecular genetics laboratories.
• Experience in computational pipeline development.
• Experience in different programming languages such as R, Python, MATLAB.
