Job Title Research Associate - Quantum Simulation of Quantum Matter

Department Research | Quantum Matter Institute | Faculty of Science (Andrea Damascelli)

Posting End Date April 30, 2023

Note: Applications will be accepted until 11:59 PM on the day prior to the Posting End Date above.

The Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute at UBC is seeking PhD-level scientific research staff to support activity in the investigation of quantum computing venues to simulate quantum matter phenomena. Relevant phenomena include quantum magnetism, spin-liquids and frustration, superconductivity, and the Kondo effect. This multi-year position as a Research Associate will play a leadership role in SBQMI\xe2\x80\x99s recently launched Grand Challenge
Pushing the Boundaries of NISQ-era Quantum Computing with a Focus on Materials . The role will support SBQMI\xe2\x80\x99s interest in developing materials-by-design by pursuing modern computational venues using available quantum hardware. The successful candidate will work with the Principal Investigators and other researchers to exploit existing public available quantum computers to develop and improve quantum algorithms of relevance for materials-related problems in gate-based, annealing, measurement-based, and continuum-states architectures.

The Research Associate will identify and conduct research projects that extend SBQMI\xe2\x80\x99s expertise in the study of quantum computing; contribute to writing and publishing articles in top-tier journals; train and mentor SBQMI students and postdoctoral fellows; be responsible to act as coordinator for quantum hardware operation and algorithm development, provide direct supervision of students, and collaborate with other national and international academic institutions, government, and industry organizations.

SBQMI is a world-leading venture into research of systems and phenomena involving quantum materials. We believe in the power of collaboration to fuel the search for creative solutions and, in addition to building a strong interdisciplinary team of experimentalists and theorists from physics, chemistry and engineering, have established strong and active partnerships with TRIUMF, the Canadian Light Source, the Max Planck Society, and many other world leading institutions.

The successful candidate will thrive in our collegial culture and will have the following qualifications:
  • Fundamental knowledge of quantum magnetism, in particular spin-liquids and valence-bond states
  • Experience with diverse quantum-materials simulation methods, including exact diagonalization, hierarchical mean-field theory, and quantum Monte-Carlo
  • Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics ;
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in a research, or research and development, environment;
  • Publications in reputable scientific journals;
  • Experience mentoring students or staff;
  • Capacity to pursue independent research;
  • Ability to manage large research programs.

If you are interested in this exciting opportunity to push the boundaries of knowledge and create world changing devices, please apply through this posting. Your application should include a cover letter, CV, a research proposal and 2 letters of recommendation.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
UBC offers a competitive benefits package including extended medical, dental, life insurance, professional development funding and pension.
