Description

The Research Associate (Limited Term) will work with the Amr S. Helmy Group, where they will lead research into semiconductor light sources for applications. The candidate will be responsible for designing and characterizing novel sources of coherent light based on active III-V semiconductor structures, developing testbeds for demonstrating these sources as part of a larger program, and devising new strategies for novel semiconductor sources.
Duties

  • Design of integrated coherent light source devices.
  • Planning and execution of experiments and testbeds for device characterization and proof-of-principle demonstrations.
  • Purchasing, maintaining, and organizing laboratory equipment.
  • Training and tracking of progress for graduate students and undergraduate student workers.
  • Develop and execute research vision with PI to achieve research goals.
  • The research associate is expected to publish both at conferences and in journals.

Qualifications

PhD in Electrical Engineering or Physics with a specialization in semiconductor laser research or acceptable combination of equivalent experience. Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and work environment. Demonstrated expertise in experimental aspects of semiconductor light sources, as well as experience in the engineering / fabrication and manufacturing of such structures. This well-rounded development is critical to the project, and necessarily combines the following criteria: (1) broad expertise in the theory and applications of semiconductor optics, especially regarding the generation and uses of single mode diode lasers; the candidate must demonstrate an outstanding ability to work with abstract concepts and connect these to useful applications; (2) strong background in integrated photonics, active compound semiconductor device manufacturing and experience in photolithographic mask creation and extensive microfabrication track record; (3) hands-on experience with optoelectronic device characterization. In addition to the above, the successful candidate must also possess demonstrated leadership and team management abilities as they will be responsible for coordinating several concurrent projects with multiple personnel. They must have the ability to work with and train students and trainees, in both theoretical and experimental techniques, and in the trouble-shooting of their experiments. The candidate must also have strong communication skills and experience preparing manuscripts for submission to peer reviewed scientific journals and research proposals to granting agencies and prospective industry partners.
