The core focus of this position would be to execute pathology nurseries and trait phenotyping trial field activities in support of the Caledon spring canola breeding program. Responsibilities would also include managing drip irrigation systems for field projects and nursery phenotyping in Ontario. In addition, work in a team environment to assist in all aspects of seedbed preparation, planting, plot maintenance, spraying and harvesting of field crops and experimental plots. The Research Associate will conduct inoculum production, nursery, greenhouse and germplasm related activities in support of the Caledon spring canola breeding program. Organize and maintain assigned greenhouse projects including planting, disease and herbicide screening, hybridization, data collection and harvesting. Receiving seed from our multi-season program in the spring to organize and prepare for yield and disease trials and preparing seed for shipment to Chile in the fall for the winter nursery. Aid in the maintenance of seed inventory including accurate recording, removal of discard seed and efficient storage of active germplasm. Conduct data collection in field experiments with data loggers/drones and develop data summaries. Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Integrated Field Science team to execute irrigated disease canola and soybean experiments.
  • Assist the parental line purification field program including construction of cages, installation of cage fabric and site maintenance.
  • Actively participate in quality assurance program and training.
  • Ensures all operations are completed in a safe manner at the Georgetown location.
  • Assess and improve safety practices to meet safety goals for reportable incidents, zero lost workdays, and environmental standards.
  • Job will require occasional travel and extended hours with weekend work during seasonal workload peaks.

Qualifications

Requirements:
What expertise have you grown? What do you bring to the table?
  • Bachelor of Science degree or Associate Diploma in Plant Science, Pathology, Agronomy, Crop Science or other relevant majors in agriculture with 1-2 years relevant experience or equivalent level of relevant education and experience.
  • Excellent PC skills using MS Office products (Excel, Access, Word and Outlook).
  • Strong organizational, planning, detail focus, data management and communication skills. Self-motivated and good interpersonal skills to foster teamwork.
  • Previous experience with agriculture field research and the operation of farm machinery or small plot research equipment is an asset.
  • The successful candidate must possess a valid G or AR (or willing to obtain) Ontario driver\xe2\x80\x99s license with a clean driving record.
  • Pesticide application license would be beneficial.
