This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).
In accordance with the , this position has a comprehensive and an annual salary range of $63,465 to $71,402. This position has an initial appointment of 1 year.
Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person work at North Campus Edmonton.
The Research Associate will support a project exploring how a community economic approach can be used to inform rural economic development. The Research Associate will work with the Drayton Valley research team and contribute to data collection and analysis related to community economic development; develop knowledge mobilization products (e.g., research briefs and manuscripts); and prepare funding applications to support the Drayton Valley work. CUP offers a supportive environment within which the Research Associate will strengthen their research skills, exercise creative and innovative thinking, and develop networks of collaborators within academia, government, and the social sector.
The Research Associate's appointment will be at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, AB, Canada. The Research Associate may need to travel to Drayton Valley for meetings or data collection.
Responsibilities:
Research and Project Management

  • Implements and oversees research activities to fulfill project objectives.
  • Employs qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches to answer research questions.
  • Oversees data collection and analysis activities ensuring that research protocols are followed.
  • Provides expertise in community-based participatory research design.
  • Supports collaborative work with research partners (community, government, and/or academic).
  • Provides leadership within the scope of the research project internally to ensure efficient and effective operations.
  • Monitors trends and issues relevant to partners.
  • Prepares funding applications
  • Tracks timelines and deliverables.
Knowledge Mobilization
  • Contributes to knowledge mobilization activities (i.e., publications and presentations in academic and non-academic venues).
  • Translates learnings into targeted, impactful information for community partners.
General
  • Leverages funding opportunities to pursue innovative projects related to rural community economic development. This includes seeking and writing research grants.
Qualifications:
  • PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., social sciences, public health, education) with a community economic development focus.
  • Minimum five years conducting research and/or evaluation projects in academic and community environments.
  • Experience in community engagement and community-based research and/or evaluation.
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative research and analytical skills.
  • Expertise in understanding, synthesizing and translating policy research, activities, trends, and issues, across sectors and context.
  • Experience and expertise in writing successful research funding applications.
  • Knowledge of research ethics and guidelines in an academic environment
  • Proven management skills to create, mentor, motivate and maintain high performing teams that may include community members, faculty, staff and students.
  • Facilitation, negotiation and problem solving skills and the ability to manage conflict.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce project deliverables that are high quality, on time, and on budget
