This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).
In accordance with the , this position has a comprehensive and an annual salary range of $59,822 to $82,266. This position has an initial appointment of 1 year, with the possibility of renewal.
Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.
This is a new position with two main areas of responsibility (1) Vaccine and antiviral drug discovery and testing (2) Support for operation of large Containment Level 3 (CL3) facility. The position works closely with the Biocontainment Supervisor and the University's Biosafety Office while reporting to the Chair of the CL3 user committee. The position also liaises with the Director of Operations and Research for the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology (LKSIoV) regarding administration and operation of the CL3 facility. The incumbent's primary duties are to support the operations and maintenance of the CFI-funded CL3 facility and equipment within the facility (50%), and to conduct discovery research (50%).
Responsibilities:
Support of CFI CL3 facility operations (35%):

  • Acquires and demonstrates appropriate training in the operations of the CFI CL3 facility to ensure that all work is conducted safely and efficiently.
Safety, compliance and accreditation (15%):
  • Assists the Biosafety Officer and Biocontainment Supervisor in the investigation of reports of accidents, possible exposures and potential containment breaches within the CFI CL3 facility.
  • Coordinates personnel and prepares the CFI CL3 facility for annual certification inspection and infrastructure verification testing.
Conduct vaccine and antiviral drug research (50%):
  • Carries out high-level complex research activities either as primary or co-investigator under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.
  • Designs and conducts complex scientific research as it relates to developing therapeutic and prophylactic treatments for respiratory viruses.
Qualifications:
  • PhD from an accredited university in virology, microbiology, immunology or cell biology, is required
  • At least 4 years postdoctoral experience in working with BSL2 and BSL3 viral pathogens
  • Experience with pathogenic respiratory viruses such as influenza viruses and coronaviruses
  • Experience with small animal models for testing antivirals and vaccines
  • Experience with RNA and protein analyses
