Position Overview

The Department of Civil Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 23 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the incumbent will advance the next generation of complex process-based hydrological models.

The incumbent will focus on the analysis and improvement of large-domain process-based hydrological models using tools such as sensitivity analysis, inverse methods for parameter estimation, and machine learning methods. This work includes scientific software development in a team environment, evaluation and improvement of complex mechanistic models of hydrological processes, presenting research results in scientific conferences, and publishing findings in peer-reviewed international journals.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Develop new capabilities for process-based hydrological models.
  • Analyze and interpret model results by applying scientific and technical knowledge.
  • Facilitate the achievement of project outcomes as per the milestones outlined in the grants governing the research programs.
  • Provide technical support to faculty, staff and students through thesis completions, lectures and all other activities that the University Professors may require.
  • Projects undertaken by this position are managed effectively, on time, on budget and aligned with the project\'s overall objectives.
  • Present specialized, technical information or research results to internal &/or external stakeholders which may include other research agents.
  • Contribute positively in a team environment.
  • Create and maintain good relationships with staff members as well as external parties.
  • Revision and discussion regarding experiment results with colleagues.
  • Review work of other individuals (i.e., grad students, summer internships, peer journals) and provide advice in increasing accuracy of results, troubleshooting.
  • Present research results at international conferences.
  • Publish research accomplishments or findings in peer-reviewed international journals.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Ph.D. degree.
  • Three years of postdoctoral experience in hydrology, civil engineering, environmental science, computer science, data science, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated record of high-quality research and publication.
  • In-depth knowledge of hydrological and water resources principles, modelling, and forecasting.
  • Experience handling large and heterogeneous geophysical datasets.
  • Strong competence in data preparation/analysis/visualization with Python, R, or a similar scripting and visualization language.
  • Competence in using Linux environments.
  • Experience with high performance computing.
  • Strong competence in programming with C/C++ or Fortran for model development & debugging.
  • Competence in software engineering best practices such as unit testing, use of modern version control systems, such as git, use of profilers / debuggers, software development etc.
  • Experience and dedication to open science.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively in both spoken and written English.
  • Sharp analytical abilities and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, multi-task, and prioritize workload.
  • Interest in mentoring junior team members.
  • Interest in science communication (e.g., blog posts, social media, and media interviews).
