Position Summary
The Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy (JSGS), University of Regina, invites applications for a Research Associate to support an exciting project funded by SHRF and SSHRC on the intersection of urban design and population health.
This one-year, full-time position (with the possibility of extension) is based at the Regina Campus. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team conducting participatory, community-engaged research using innovative approaches such as arts-based methods (e.g., photovoice, digital storytelling, reflective diaries) and consensus-building techniques (e.g., Nominal Group Technique, World Cafe, Delphi).
This is an opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research that engages community organizations, youth-led groups, municipal policy and decision-makers, urban design professionals, and public health leaders in shaping healthier, more equitable and inclusive cities and communities.
The successful applicant will:
  • Collaborate within a research team and independently, engaging diverse stakeholders (community partners, policy makers, service providers, professionals, youth organizations).
  • Apply strong qualitative research skills in data collection, analysis, and interpretation (e.g., interviews, focus groups, consensus-building methods, document analysis).
  • Support project management by coordinating research activities, timelines, and outputs.
  • Lead and support ethics applications and ensure compliance with research ethics protocols.
  • Conduct literature reviews (scoping, narrative, rapid reviews) and synthesize evidence.
  • Support the preparation of high-quality research outputs including peer-reviewed journal articles, policy briefs, reports, and conference presentations.
  • Present and communicate research findings to academic, policy, and community audiences at local, national, and international levels.
  • Provide regular updates to the research team on research participant engagement, data collection, and analysis.
Position Requirements
Education and Experience:
  • Graduate degree in public health, health policy, political science, or a related social science discipline; a thesis-based Master's is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of research experience in public health or population health, with demonstrated responsibility for ethics applications, and qualitative data analysis.
  • Strong track record in academic publishing, including at least one first-author publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
Research Skills:
  • Proven expertise in qualitative research (data collection and analysis using thematic analysis, grounded theory, or related approaches).
  • Experience with focus groups, policy roundtables, or participatory community-engaged research is a significant asset.
  • Proficiency with NVivo (or similar qualitative analysis software), bibliographic management tools (e.g., EndNote), and academic databases (PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, etc.).
Professional Skills:
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving abilities, with demonstrated capacity to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
