Position Overview

The Body Image Research Lab in the Werklund School of Education invites applications for a Research Associate. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The research lab includes multiple graduate students and post-doctoral scholars. Our team conducts innovative research on body image, eating disorders, obesity and weight bias, with particular interest in how the spectrum of eating and weight-related issues materialize in education, and health settings and how to employ a social justice lens to our work.

The Werklund School of Education has a history of scholarly achievement and offers a vibrant research, teaching and learning environment. Werklund School of Education strives for a participatory culture through collaboration, interdisciplinarity and innovation internally and with partners in education nationally and internationally.

This position is a part of the AUPE Collective Bargaining Unit. Regular work hours 6-15 hours per week. Flexibility is required as constantly shifting priorities might create a need for evenings and weekends work.

The incumbent will contribute to the overall mission, public outreach, and research carried out by the Body Image Research Lab. This highly skilled and organized individual will be integral to multiple projects and a resource and mentor to the changing members of the Lab. Some work related to this position will be more in a supportive role, with other aspects will require leadership skills.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Research:

  • The incumbent will play an important role in the successful and timely completion of research projects carried out by the lab.
  • Research related work may include the following tasks:
  • Grant writing and oversight of grant management and reporting
  • Ethics applications and modifications, and project management,
  • Assisting with the interviewing and training of suitable research assistants
  • Assisting with budgetary oversight and accounting for long-term projects
  • Analysis of research data
  • Preparing and revising mid-term and final reports related to research projects
  • This individual will support the community of graduate students conducting research in the lab by:
  • Being a part of mentorship teams for graduate students and generally a resource to all members of the lab
  • Helping facilitate monthly lab meetings
  • Planning social events for lab members
  • Making recommendations on projects, operations, presentations, or policy-related work carried out by the lab
Knowledge Dissemination:
  • The incumbent will play a critical role in sharing research and core understandings from the Lab by:
  • Serving as a key communicator with the public
  • Supporting various forms of knowledge mobilization with the public, including public presentations, media inquiries, media and article creation, and other unique requests
  • Updating and publishing documents and resources on the Body Image Research Lab website
  • Creating other innovative ways to share lab research with the public (e.g. social media, podcasts, etc.)
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • A doctorate degree in education is required.
  • A combination of a Masters degree in education or related field and proven record of experience may be considered.
  • A minimum of three years of related experience in the post-secondary, context with preference given to candidates with research experience in weight-related or body image issues
  • Work experience with mentoring and leading others in a team context is required
  • A record of presentations - scholarly and/or community-based - is required.
  • A record of publications or other scholarly outputs would be considered an asset.
  • Previous experience in coordinating events or community engagement would be considered an asset
  • Previous knowledge and work or academic service within a university setting would be considered an asset
  • As many requests of the lab relate to the K-12 context, teaching experience is preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in grant-writing and long-term project management
  • Excellent writing and copy-editing skills
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Experience with podcast production and webpage maintenance would be considered an asset
