The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto invites applications for a

Research Associate (2 Year Term)

position affiliated with the

Advanced Micro and Nanosystems Laboratory (AMNL)

. This position is focused on the design, fabrication, and integration of

intelligent microsystems for biomedical applications

, with an emphasis on

organ-on-a-chip platforms

,

high-throughput bioassays

, and

flexible bioMEMS sensors

.



The Research Associate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams across engineering, life sciences, and clinical research, contributing to international collaborative efforts and translational R&D in biomedical device innovation.



The Research Associate will be responsible for:

Develop and execute research vision with PI to achieve research goals. Designing and fabricating micro/nano platforms for organ-on-a-chip and sensing systems Developing integrated biosensing microsystems that enable high-sensitivity and real-time signal acquisition Leading and managing research projects focused on smart biomedical platforms for drug testing and disease modeling Supervising and mentoring students and research staff in cleanroom microfabrication and biosystem integration Preparing manuscripts, patents, technical reports, and funding proposals The research associate is expected to publish both at conferences and in journals.

Qualifications:



Education





Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering with specialization in micro/nano systems, MEMS, and bioinstrumentation.

Experience





Minimum five years of equivalent research experience in the development of bioMEMS devices and organ-on-a-chip systems. Proven track record in designing and fabricating micro sensor arrays and high-throughput diagnostic platforms. Hands-on experience in micro/nano fabrication tools and techniques. Hands-on experience in cell culture and integration with bioMEMS instruments. Demonstrated leadership in managing research projects.

Skills





Proficient in microfabrication and bioengineering. Strong publication record in high-impact journals. Familiarity with CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD, L-Edit), FEA tools (e.g., COMSOL), and data acquisition systems. Strong skills in working with various types of cells and clinical samples. Capabilities in AI-assisted sensing and data analysis. Demonstrable ability to apply initiative, tact, judgement, accuracy, and confidentiality with meticulous attention to detail. Intermediate skill level with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook). Superior problem solving, customer service, and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated positive attitude and service orientation towards students, staff and the public. Proven capability to work independently, with instruction, and within a team environment. Proven ability to organize, multi-task, manage conflicting priorities and meet all deadlines while quickly adapting and learn new processes.
